SKS to FAL conversion, MK1 (56k warning)

Hmm - didn't check this recently. Anyways, I seem to have started on a mosin PU project as well as an SVT to SVD conversion, however:

For submission I'm just going to put the sks front sight back on. It's the easiest and most straitforward thing, and that way the testers won't get frustrated with sighting the bugger in.

For the end project, The sight assy will be all FAL. Rear sights go into the lower reciever, sks rear sights are removed and used as a mounting point, FAL sight gets mounted onto the gas tower on the sks, and the barrel gets threaded and fitted for the FAL flash hider. SHould work pretty well, as with my rough mocking up the sights actually seem to lign up very well.

Once I get my PU done I think I'll go back to work on the SKS/FAL.

Oh - one other thing - the extra 3mm plate dust cover between the lower reciever and main spring seems to have pushed the spring to its very limit for compression. It can do it, but can't go a mm farther. It may interfere with cycling, so it's going to be tested this weekend and we'll see what has to be done then.

Well, here's a vid of it functioning properly:

P.S. - haven't bothered to edit out the camera technical difficulties, bear with it.

Now that I have that really and truly in hand, I'm going to remake the safety sear into something much more substantial and get a start on the aesthetic aspects.

i've been following this thread but not sayin much....... till now.

Holy Fark dude....... that's all i gots to say :D

Cool project rifle and a very interesting imagination as well.but please wear safety glasses especially when testing a prototype!!!!!!!

Ahhh, true. Truth be told I took them off, as they were fogging so badly I couldn't see a thing. Also, it has functioned properly before, with much higher pressure ammo, and after being stripped down and inspected several times before it never showed any problems, so I guess I wasn't as worried.

Still, was foolish of me.

Someone should start selling these. I want one.

Well, if anyone out there has the facilities I'm more than happy to work with them. I'm not exactly rolling in dough so I could use a little cash:p The way it's looking, I'm going to have to sell one or two to pay for tuition next year anyways:mad:

So I'm working through things, and I've come to a problem. To mount the FAL front sight (and gas tower, as they're one in the same), I have two options.

1) Weld it to the sks gas riser. This would give a strong weld, and very solid front sight, but completely bugger the look of the gun. Plus it would introduce a bunch of issues in mounting the hand guard, as well as make it a B*tch to put on and take off the gas system.

2) Weld or fit it to the gas system. The big problem I forsee here is getting the front sight solid and stable. Big thing would be to make mounts on the gas tube that would brace against the barrel, thus stopping it from rotating at all. This would look correct, be fairly solid, make mounting the handguard easier, and avoid welding right up against the barrel.

I'm leaning towards option #2, as this gun is being built mainly to look good. Accuracy, already poor from an SKS, wasn't part of the build's goals. It has to function properly and look good... if I want accuracy I'll use my K31.

That said, I'd like some alternate opinions as well, in case I've missed something.
