Hey all,

Ive got a couple sks' that ive shot a lot of and have a blast with. Ive re-done the stocks on both and they are in good condition. I shoot corrosive and am well acquainted with the cleaning process as they remain rust free.

So im getting tired of the stock irons. Ill leave one alone probably but the other I was looking to set up for some shooting at a distance. Definately no more than 500m. It is an sks after all.

Im getting extended butt pads for both and will will be getting wartak rails for both- unless someone can suggest a better rail system.

For the one I want to change around im looking for the best bi-pod and scope options. I will again be leaving the guns otherwise stock (exception being rail and butt pad) so for bipods I think im limited to the very basic style ones that attach directly to the barrel or to the bayo lug, correct? Will the barrel attached bipod destroy the blueing? is there a benifit to either? am i wrong and those arent my only options?

For the scope i was thinking something modest and not over the top. Vortex pst comes to mind as a reasonable option. Other suggestions? Also I dont plan on boiling my scope after shooting corrosive (obviously) and dont want to cross contaminate. Will salts get on the scope? (I presume they will) Will the scope rust? If i take it and put it on my DD AR am I going to be risking rust on my AR?

Any input is great and much appreciated!! I want to hit some crown land soon and do a little prone shooting.

Thanks again,

Rock Out

The Wartak or Kwik Rail are both about the same. The retaining pin is the only issue we have ran into and this is the cure we have found: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...I-find-Wartak-SKAR-SD-R-Rail-replacement-pins

As far as scope I have had good success with the UTG 3-9X32 CQB Bugbuster Scope. I can consistantly hit the 300yd gong shot after shot even after removing the rear pin and lifting scope rail for cleaning and it returns to zero every time. I don't have a bipod on my scoped hunter but I have a bayo lug bipod on my range plinker. Works fine for me. I replaced the rear sight with a peep and it seems to work well. As far as the scope rusting the scopes are coated so that shouldn't be an issue. Just wipe them down and you should be good to go.

The UTG seems like exactly what I would need in terms of size/cost and magnification. Have you had any issues with the reticle being out of alignment/ inverted or off axis?? These were reoccurring issues that I noticed when going through some of the reviews?

I haven't had a chance to use it alot but i have spent some range time shooting from 50yd to 300yds and have found no issues. I personally love this scope. It is clear, accurate and I have had no issues. I don't know if they were offered in different reticle styles. I have the New Generation with Ranging Mil-Dot reticle on mine with parallax adjustment from 3yds to infinity. It has the red/green illuminating reticle and lockable/resettable target turrets. I have it zeroed dead on at 100yds. I crank it to 9 power and hold 2 dots down for 300yds. Simple as that. No fuss no muss.

IMHO, you can't make the SKS better than how it was issued. You can make it more menacing, but as it sits, its at the peak of its functionality and reliability.

If you must alter it, the only real mod for most that makes it any better is a drill and tap mount and scope that is bolted to the receiver side wall, not the action cover.

Ps most scopes are aluminum and won't rust normally. Wipe the soot off with a lightly oiled rag. Make sure its mounted back far enough to not get pelted by empties.

That's the only worthwhile alteration. Every other alteration is a gimmick.

I've heard the drill and tap method is the surest way to hold zero and obtain the best results. Problem is I dont have the tools to do this myself. The impression that I got was that the wartak rail was one of the best when it came to rails mounted to the action cover. Im not expecting a tack driver (hate that term lol) as it is an sks but if I can get results similar to what ljones is describing I will be happy with it!

I will pimp mine everytime this comes up :)

I think my next mod is the 7.62x39 pistol mag adapter
