SKS vs M14 vs CZ858 - opinions and comparisons wanted

so whats the difference in cost for the ammo? I've heard you can grab a crate of SKS ammo for around 200-250$

thanks again for the replies everyone, its very informative and useful for my decision!
Im leaning towards an SKS, but the M14 seems to tempting considering the one I'm looking at is nicely outfitted with parts etc

I find a chopped m14 with a scout mount red dot to be my favorite all around go to rifle. Short, with much more stopping power than my cz. The only thing is it's heavier. I put a good sling on her and can lug it all day.

A crate of surplus will run a bit over 200 bucks, but if you reload for the 308 it is almost the smae price and you can tweak your loads for even better acuracy. In my opinion the M14 first and then a CZ second with the SKS last. My buddy has a decked out CZ with a really nice bushnell red dot and al fab accessories and it is awesome. It is the same stuff I will be adding to mine, especially the front handgrip/bipod combo.

Perhaps start with the SKS. Start cheap and find out what you would want and when you do, you can make a much more sound decision on your next purchase. Since it's cheap and has resale demand, you can go nuts with it and treat it as such. Cheap ammo is a plus and it can be a deer cartridge. Even though the accuracy is nothing to brag about it may also be a nice place to slip into if you've only used hunting long guns due to similar stock configuration. Cz and M14 will beat it hands down but you're starting. Naturally, get all 3 as they're all fine guns. But if you must have one, start slow, then big.

Try Lever Arms in Vancouver or Wanstall's in Maple Ridge. You don't need to limit yourself though to just BC, the folks at Wolverine Supplies are great and I highly recommend them. I've also had great dealings with Wanstall's and have shopped with Lever Arms since the early 90s. Never a problem!

how about the Mini-14 target? opinions?
I played around with one - heavy! But apparently quite accurate
I owned Mini-14 target. The key word owned. Don't even waste your time or money on this heavy @$$ paper puncher. It's some what accurate and the harmonic dampener works well but if you want a bench rifle that it is supposed to be, Think Again...
I got an M14 and can do the same thing with the right ammo and a few tweeks from M14Doctor. Plus cost's half the price.

thank you everyone for your replies and information.

I purchased a CZ858 yesterday from Yorkton Home Hardware, should be arriving in the mail soon. I'll do some research on everything i need to know about it (field stripping, maintenance, etc).
If anyone would care to point me in the right direction that would be fantastic.

thnx again

there is the sks D if you want a detactable mag opition, also marstar sells an addtachment that goes on an sks so you can put 5 round mags on it

Field stripping it is even easier than my SKS. It is a joy to shoot.

My buddy got a bushnell 1x32 tactical styled scope from P&D Ent. and it has open sights on the top of it as well as flip up covers for under 200 bucks. I think it is a near perfect optic for this gun but look around and see what is out there.

SKS is fun. CZ-858 is fun too. Get tracers for these.

I took a SKS to an AR course and outshot quite a few guys. Very handy little carbine...great for a varmint or deer hunt.

I loved my SKS, but when i saw the CZ and researched into it, I knew it was a good next move.
So I got one and I love it. Its light and accurate.. it just feels crisp in your hands. The ammo is cheap too obviously, so if you can shoot often, 7.62x39 is your ammo. It wont break the bank.
