From a distance- I love the SKS, although when I get closer, and start thinking about buying one, there's a few things that end up ticking me off, which ends up that I don't purchase it. What are these things?
Cosmoline. Now granted, its not that big a deal, since there is several ways of stripping this nuisance lubricant, but for me I like having the security with a firearm of being able to unbox it, do a quick teardown, and pack it up for a range day. With the cosmo, it becomes at least a full day affair removing that ****. But the cosmoline is the least of my woes, when it comes to these rifles.
The stock. Now maybe its just me, (and most likely is), but I find the wood stock that these rifles come with butt ugly. For me, I'd much prefer to have a black stock, maybe with a rail or two on it.

Maybe I'm just complaining. (And thats exactly what I'm doing) But can anyone reconfirm my faith in the SKS- and with the little free time I have- is it worth purchasing, just to spend another $200-$300 cleaning it up and replacing the stock?

Cleaning the cosmoline is not a big deal. I don't even remember doing it.

About the stock, yes it can be replaced but personally I like the original stock more.

SKS is what it is. If you want a modern rifle get a AR15.

Easy solution: buy a used one. No cosmo to clean off and you can find them in the EE with the tacticrap on them too. Have a look - buy one - and go have fun. :)

Doesn't sound like these rifles are for you,not a problem there are lots of other nice rifles out there. Not for $169. but they are out there, leave the sks for us. You also have to consider that most inexpensive ammo is corrosive and the rifle needs maintenance and cleaning soon after your trip to the range, another in the minus column! These are not perfect for sure, but to some of us they are fun. Cheers .

It doesn't sound like any real firearm is for you. They (gasp) even require cleaning and maintenance AFTER you use them, not just when you take them out of the box for the first time.

I love your posts.. I laugh and laugh and laugh.... :D

Damn. You folks have talked me into the SKS. Are you happy for yourselves? You're making me poor!
Just a quick additional question: Any recommended aftermarket stocks for the SKS?

I'm not trying to be rude but I can guess you are a young man/boy in your early twenties. It seems young guys have to have guns that match the ones their G.I. Joes carried. I guess this isn't good or bad but just an observation.

Like others have said a mall ninja can be picked up on EE and you can be sure the cosmoline will have been removed by the twenty year old that put it together. :ninja:
