I picked up a SKS the other day, its caked up pretty good with cosmoline and I'm planning on cleaning it out tonight, but I have to pick up a few things to do it. I watched a few vids on how to remove it. Seen guys using brake cleaner, the guy who sold it to me said I could bake it in the oven, but I dont think my wife will be ok with that. I was thinking of using gunk silicone spray or wd40 to break it up, then using a solvent to remove the wd40 or silicone. Do you think that will be ok? or should I just use solvent and gun oil? Any tips you gus have are much appriecated
 
Separate the action from the stock. Put paper towels/rags into the bottom of a metal garbage can. Paint the garbage can flat black if you want. Put the rifle parts inside and leave them out in the hot sun all day long. The cosmoline will simply melt off. Then you just need a little bit of solvent to finish.

Do you think a heat gun will set on low will be safe to help speed up the process? And do I just use gun oil on the trigger assembley, or white lithium grease?
 
As Grouse Man says, separate the metal from wood. I used Varsol (Mineral Spirits) as it immediately melts the cosmoline off of the metal (even out of the trigger assembly). It just pours right out. It's pretty much instantaneous and doesn't harm the metal. Just oil as normal afterwards.

I baked my stock in the oven. It's not actually all that smelly - just open a window. Do it on a bake sheet lined with aluminum foil and nothing will drip off.

Last one I did took about 90 minutes - no problems. I actually enjoyed doing it, but there might be something wrong with me.
 
Me and my dad did two in a couple hours. All we used was boiling water. Just put all the small parts in a pot and boil them for 20 mins or so. Big parts will need hot water poured on them and through them. Make sure to dissasemble the bolt and boil those parts too.

Worked great!

I used mineral spirts before but hot water and a bit of dishsoap cleans all metals parts very well and doesn't smell bad.

Grouse Man said it best for the stock. Works great too if you have good weather ;)

I used mineral spirits and hot water for the problem areas that were just caked.

Just don't forget to dry and oil it after.
 
I disassembled mine, sprayed everything with lots of Remington Action Cleaner, including the stock. All the goo runs off and it cleans the stock nicely, and didn't damage it at all. Wipe it down, lube it up, reassemble it, then shoot!
 
Maybe we're to the point of beating a dead horse here but I set all my metal parts in a bin and poured large amount of boiling hot water all over and added dawn soap.

With the stock though... you guys must have some large oven or something because I can't physically fit my stock in the oven, I just wrapped it in paper towel and a garbage bag (s) and left it on my buddies HOT deck all day, worked very well.
 
Here's one method i use:

1. varsol to start... immerse the metal parts in it and leave for a bit then aggitate
2. hot soapy water
3. dry out as well as you can then use brake cleaner in all the nooks and crannies (it wil displace water and residual cosmoline)
4. Fluid film everything...

I use fluid film now everytime i go shooting my corrosive ammo. Fluid film is a moisture displacer, a lubricant, salt neutralizer, and also a corrosion inhibitor. We use Fluid film on sea cranes, mobile cranes, welding rigs, oil rigs, heavy equipment, etc etc. And now I use it on my firearms... I also use G96 but that stuff is too expensive to be spraying all the time. My SKS, Mosin Nagant, and two Savage Axis' get exclusively Fluid film.

EDIT: Oh yes, just read the previous post, Dawn works awesome on it too! All in all, as long as you find a way to get it all off, it's all good! Pay special attention to the free floating firing pin if you have one... Make sure you get ALL the cosmoline out or you may get slam-fires... Happy shooting!
 
Don't mean to steal the thread but would Krown T40 be good too? I have a lot of it where i work and its a rust inhibitor and lub. I can get T32 also which is a penetrant, rust inhibitor, lubricant and antiseize.
 
If it's a rust inhibitor, lubricant, and salt neutralizer go for it! Likely just as good as the fluid film... :)

Yup.. these posts may seem like old news to some, but cant let that stop me from helping a new sks owner out.
Hot water and soap does it for me. and oil afterwards.

Im sure youre very excited !!.. :)

Instead of starting a new thread I figured I'd ask in this one. I bought a Tapco stock today, and I just about have everything installed on the new stock except for the gas block with the picitinny rail. For the love of god! I can not remove that pin. Do you guys have any tips on how to get that pin out of there? I'm almost at the point where I'll paint the wood black and just use the stock one.

The kit also came with 2 pins, but I cant figure out where they go. Any ideas? And my last issue is that the mag is a bit loose. Its still the stock mag, not the tapco. Is this normal?

That pin is smaller at 1 side, you need a good punch,rest the handguard securely and a good blow of hammer, the pin should come out. I never have difficulties yet to remove thoses pins. The 2 pins must be for the handguard,use 1 and keep the other as a spare.
