Wore out two of them when i was a kid. Shot sparrows, muskrats, gophers, mice, grasshoppers, crickets, flys, blackbirds, and pidgeons when the old caretaker at the drive-in theater would let us in behind the enclosed screen. He breasted them out and took them home for a meal. Likewise my old neighbour once asked for a bunch of sparrows for sparrow pie. Brought him back a paper grocery bag full of 50 sparrows. As I remember it, the breast was about the size of a mans thumbnail. These guys probably grew up through the dirty '30s.
Used to open the tin of Beatle? brand pellets and pop a good handful of them into my mouth for a quick and ready supply. I preferred the Beatle brand pellets over the Crossman because 1) they were pointed and 2) they were not lubricated. Lead poisoning never even dawned on me and look I turned out all right, can spell and all!
Mom and Dad were happy as I was out of their hair from sun-up to sun-down. We lived on the edge of town so it was easy to get out and be gone the whole day. Only had the local constabulary drive me home twice, not because I shot their windows out or anything, but some do-gooder spotted me with a rifle and complained.
