Slowly updated SKS wood stock refinishing thread

To the OP and mamma, nice work on the stocks!! They both look WAY better than they do when you get them. Mamma, nice work on the cut-out for the Choate mount; nicely fitted as well as finished.
Cheers!! :)

This thread so intrigued me I started my own refurb of the stock on my SKS this past week. Unfortunately the wood grain in the stock is no where near as nice as the ones posted here by the OP and mama. :(

Oh well, it's still looking better than it did! :D

Mamma: nice job! It turned out great. I ran into a SNAFU with a pesky run of tung oil when I didn't wipe out all the oil from inside the butt stock swivel mounting hole, and it oozed out overnight and created a lump. One of these days it'll be finished. :)

Dude, very nice SKS.... :)

Also, your basement is just begging me to insulate and vapour barrier it all up!!!!

jimbo14: thanks! we're all waiting to see pics of your finished gun

Me too! :)

C'mon to Vancouver and give me a hand - everything is here. I have tons of beer. :D I need to get the wiring done and then finish the framing, touch up the heating ducts, pass all those inspections and then it'll be time for insulating. It'll get done one day. Right now it's a great workshop. :)

ok...it's finally done. I've been busy here in addition to dealing with a couple mistakes on my part. I'll file those under "lessons learned". :)

Pics first and final thoughts will be posted later on. I'm swamped right now.

With camera flash on a crummy laminate floor:

With camera flash on a basic sold oak floor for colour comparison. Tried to show the grain but no camera pic was able to do it justice. The tung oil (both tinted and regular) on the stock looks nice.

"Corrected" finger groove with fake heat colouring on the end of the stock:

No camera flash to better show the true colour. Notice how the flash in the previous pics makes everything a bit more orange? The stock is quite red, which was my goal for this stock. Mission accomplished. :)

Another shot partially showing the darker areas where you'd grip the rifle during use. I think those turned out fairly well.

I'll come back to this later on, but for now I'm done with refinishing this rifle. Until next winter.... lol!
