HI guys, can anyone tell me what the velocity of Winchester Super-X® Power Point Rifled Slugs (2 3/4 inch) would be through a 12.5 smooth bore (Dominion Grizzly)? Winchester lists the velocity at about 1700fps but I would assume that would be out of a 18 or 20 inch barrel.
cheers,
Clobb

ACTUAL CHRONO DATA: NOT GUESSTIMATED OR MADE UP

Here is some slug testing I did with Federal slugs a while back: Ammunition was 2 3/4" Federal Classic 1 oz. (Grey/Blue Box) Slugs.

Test Guns were 20" Mossberg 590, 14" DAC/870 Remington and later with a 8.5" Dlask 870
Velocities:
20" : 1513 fps average
14" : 1353 fps average
Velocity loss was 25-30 fps per inch of barrel lost.
I don't have the 8.5" data handy but the 8.5" barrel gave about 1220 fps IIRC
Hope that helps

It does! Thanks!

Has anyone ever done any accuracy tests with a 12 1/2" barrel? I wonder what they would group like at 50 yds.

Here you are.

I bought 3 box of Winchester slug (the cheapest one)

First, 25yard with Sluggy.

50 Yards 5 shots

Now comes with buck shots with Maggie. I use Rem express 00buck with 8 shots, Impoved MOD choke

15 yards

also, I tried 2 box of target load with both Maggie and Sluggy, both baby doing flawlessly.

please tell me you're not serious

Why wouldn't I be? Looks like he's getting 3 inch groups with cheap ammo at 50 yards. I would assume 4 inch groups at 75 yards would be more than possible with good ammo and proper sights. The shotgun he's using has ghost ring sights. Also, I don't hunt so I'm speculating.

remember though, the 5 shot 50 yard group was with 18'' grizzly not with a 12.5

Ok I just re-read the original post and saw the writing on the 50 yard target - it was with a 18' barrel!! Maybe I'm way off base then..thanks for the heads up. Just for sh!ts and giggles though I'll post a 75 yard target with my new Grizz when it comes in.

Guys kill deer with 6" barrel handguns all the time in the USA..Why not a 12" barrel shotgun?

You may have to install some rifle style sights.

I can certainly hit a deer vital size target from offhand, every time, using a slug and my 14" barrel shotgun. losing 1.5" isn't going to make a difference.

Bototm line is- Until you try it and check your accuracy, you won't know. If you can hit the target well at 75 yards, I am sure the slug will kill the deer;)

HA, don't worry it... the only reason i knew about it is because i remember reading the oringal thread of that range report.

And good luck with the slugs at 75 yards, if it even remotely accurate i'll have a reason to make my own one of these...

SJ rail, Vltor Modstock on Endine buffer tube, Ergo grip, Midway Flip ups, Ergo railed fore end, Fab arms folding front grip.

I tried 50 yard and 100 yard with my Grizzly (first batch with light weight barrel) using red dot.

I posted the result before but here they are for who didn't see them:

Best 100 yard group:

Group always open up vertically. The reason is the 870's barrel is not free floating.

The Griz I used:

Shotguns, unlike rifles, see very little velocity difference as barrel length changes. You can expect to see maximum velocity from a slug load in about the first 15" of barrel so in a 12.5" barrel, you would see a bit of a decrease but can't say how much for sure. My guess is you could subtract about 5-7% per inch under 15 inches but that's just an educated guess.

I found the chrono data from my 8.5" 870:

Federal PowerShok 1 oz slug (advertised velocity is 1610 fps)
Actual 8.5" Velocity: 1153, 1159,1107,1181, 1122 for an average of 1144fps

Remington Copper Solid 1 1/4 oz chronoed at 1097, 1088
Remington Buckhammer 1 1/4oz - 1174 *Heavier recoil than others

Cheers

Well for one thing, the 50 yd target has 18" barrel written on it.

Interesting data Ike but I'm not sure that you can conclude from that, that there is a per inch loss of velocity, only that a 14" barrel shot slower than a 20" barrel. The majority of that velocity could have been lost between 14 and 15 or 16 inches. As shotgun powder burns so rapidly compared to rifle powders, the most dramatic losses of velocity are in shorter barrels and the per inch loss from 12-14 for example would be far more dramatic than from 18-22.
