Your 'most of Ontario' doesn't include a lot of Ontario for 2 1/2 months. Have a look at the map that is referred to below. In Ontario, you cannot tell a CO that you have a gun for "self defense/ protection...not allowed.
But crows, coyotes (most of Ont.) and others can be hunted year-round...so you are hunting.
Technicality, yes, but it is a way around the "system".![]()
A small game licence tag also permits you to hunt American crow, brown-headed cowbird, common grackle, house sparrow, red-winged blackbird or starlings and other animals not scheduled under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997 (e.g., groundhogs)**. You may also hunt on game bird hunting preserves with this licence. This licence is not valid in northern Ontario and part of central Ontario from June 16 to August 31, except for hunting by falconry and hunting game birds on a game bird hunting preserve (see Map 2, pages 8 to 9, for more details).

Ill pay the fine rather then get eaten alive by a grizzley. Shells would only piss a bear off. 3 Inch slug could change his mind.
That made me smile. Haven't listened to Bad Habits in a number of years.
"In an area where there are bears and you're carrying dead birds you can't protect yourself from said bears"!
When I hunt grouse I have a shell belt with 20 rounds of 20 guage... slugs..
Must be hefty Grouse in BC.
When I hunt grouse I have a shell belt with 20 rounds of 20 guage #6 shot and 5 slugs...
Thankfully there is no such silly law in BC.
ONly 5 slugs:
I carry them in case I see a deer or bear I might want to kill. Or if a bear wanted to eat me, i guess...I've slipped them into my shotgun barrels a couple of times but never needed to use them.
Started doing that after an intense and scary ordeal with an absolutely giant black bear who was also pissed off at my Gal and I, and there I was standing there with 2 rounds of #6 on the barrels, trying to look tough.![]()
Most of us dont set out to break any game laws....we all go out to have a stress free day, a walk on the wild side with a gun.
It just seems right being a Canadian to go out hunting, plinking or target shooting.... and I sometimes feel guilty for not getting out as much as I should.
Co's are good guys and are there to protect game... fair enough, but be careful what you say cause they seem to be judge and jury of the bush.
They can find you guilty of the simplest things, and know you wont fight charges if you live 500 kms away. so the petty fines are around one or two days pay and most just give up and pay.
Not bad really, if you think you talked youre way into being buds with a co.![]()
Since I don't live in Canada(only in my mind wish I did)it seems stupid to charge one with
intent to hunt bigger game just because they had the round on there person,as oposed
to in there weapon! If they caught you with the Bernekke slug in your gun ,then it' s
pretty obious you are not grouse hunting!
It's trullay a shame a man can't hunt with a 12 guage and have bird shot and buck or
slugs with him!
