Smith and Wesson Model 1854

I'd be more interested in a mag fed lever, like the new henry supreme, but in 44 mag. But I will be watching the S&W. Canadian sites are already posting it at $1859.99 retail, so it is up there in $$. That supreme in 5.56 might be the one I end up with first tho.

That supreme looks really cool too. Didn't catch a look at that one until you posted it. Thank you.

If they tried calling it the "1894" wouldn't that be running afoul of Winchester?

NAA.

If anything it would be running afoul of Marlin, as its based on the Marlin 1894. Any patent protection on that would be long gone, so copying it certainly isn't an issue, perhaps the name could be trademarked by Marlin though? IIRC Trademarks don't expire as long as you keep using it. The fact both Marlin and Winchester made a "model 1894" makes me thing they probably can't trademark it either though.

Blows my mind they aren't releasing a wood model thats a bit more money than the plastic one, I feel like THAT is the model most guys who covet lever guns would want. Like really, who wants a lever gun with a plastic stock and a safety?...

Maybe I'm getting old, but even given the fact most of my rifles and shotguns have plastic/synthetic stocks, it just seems strange to see plastic on a lever. I love my Big Boy .44 wood with brass receiver, but when I saw the Big Boy X years ago, I took a hard pass. Same for the colour case hardened option - reminds me of looking at my driveway with my car leaking oil all over it.

The 1854, while compelling from a functional perspective, just isn't my thing (from an aesthetics perspective, even though from a distance it looks a slight bit like an All Weather from Henry) and maybe it's social and movie conditioning throughout my life, but I just can't see a lever in anything other than wood. Maybe that's for the same reason I get ill when I see a sporterized SKS.

Price for the 1854 seems a bit steep for what you are getting. I totally get why they made this, though - would be nice if it came in wood. I will say that for sure including the rail is a nice touch (compared to Henry) and having the MLOK slots is convenient though I wish there was a way to plug it if not in use.
