Smith & Wesson M&P or Gen 4 Glock 21

Once a m&p can put a hundred k or more rounds thorugh it or go a few k without cleaning and malfunction, it's reliable. Until then it's not.

Really? That's what your worried about when purchasing a pistol? How about clean it once and a while, and not try to purposly f@ck your gun up.

Been considering the M&P just wondering if it has the same ridiculous grip angle the Glock has?

I vote gen4 G21 with Trijicon night sights.....

The m&p NEEDS the integral mounted tool, loose that and you're up poop creek.

Not true at all.

Safety check, lock the slide to the rear, rotate the take down lever, gently release the slide forward, pull the trigger, slide comes right off.

Mike the M&P grip is not as severe as the Glock and lacks the hump that impacts the base of my palm. The M&P has an embedded steel frame that reduce the flex found in polymer pistols. The M&P has better sights, like the Glock a less than stellar trigger and mags that I would rate as only adequate. For playing the games and recreational shooting the gun is a very good choice among many good choices.

As you seem to suggest most shooters won't shoot 100K in their lifetime. Cleaning a pistol seems to make sense to most. S&W has an armourers course just like Glock has. Anything mechanical can break and M&P's as well as Glocks are no exception. From your response I quoted I know you know that already.

ps infidel29 I have owned an M&P since they were first available in Canada. I can't recall ever using the "tool" that holds the replaceable grip in place to push the take down lever down. Knife blade, screwdriver, end of a cleaning rod yes but never the "tooL'.

I go one step further and don't even bother lowering the sear deactivation lever at all! You don't need to if you use the instructions I provided in post 24 of this thread.

Also, the armourers course isn't really necessary when you have the armourers manual.

The manual on Steve's Pages isn't the Armourers Manual. I bought a manual that breaks down every part in the gun. Very easy to strip down to the frame. Nice reliable simple to use firearm. Reasonably priced too.

So my M&P with 25,000+ rounds through it isn't reliable? Even though every one of the five or so malfs I've had was caused exclusively by bad ammunition? Oh, OK. I yield to your greater skill and experience.

Well I guess that's 10% of what Chuck Taylor did with his glock (over 250k and rising).

Reliable means different things to different people. If reliable to you means you can shoot 50 rounds once a month and then clean your gun, good for you.

I always want my gun to go bang when I pull the trigger. That's reliable for me. Having to clean it every 1000 isn't for me thank you.

My idea of reliable is being able to shoot lead projectiles. How does your Glock handle that without any cleaning? :stirthepot2: :p ;) :)

I have used and tried to love the Glock since 1994, Wrenchgod and I put a lot of ammo down our G17s and G19s, I have recently put my issue M&P through a lot of crap, it fits me better, I shoot it better and it is almost as simple as a Glock ... for me I like the M&P, not sure you can go wrong with either.

I defer to your expertise.

Thanks for the explanation, never been a huge fan of the glock because of the grip angle but always wanted a polymer pistol. Think I'm going to try and track down the long slide M&P from the performance center.

Just to clarify I'm not mike from Canmore. Mike Muir is the lead singer from Suicidal Tendencies.

CT shot a Glock 17 to 250,000.

He does not recommend the G21 and doesn't shoot one.

Vickers described the 21 as "a dog". He also shoots a G17.

The Glock 17 and the Glock 21 are two different guns. When the G21 has the same reputation for reliability as the M&P45, I'll recommend it. At this time, most of the serious, big-name Glock shooters I know of are shooting 9mm Glocks. The big polymer .45s are the M&P and the HK.

If you are having to clean your M&P45 every 1000 rounds to make it work, it's broken and you should send it back.

Ok so I'm trying to decide what one of these two pistols I should get for my first restricted. What I would like from the community is for people that own or have shot both pistols, what the better choice for a first would be. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I have both. The first one I got, between the two, was the 9mm M&P range kit, then the Glock 21SF. I like the 45 better, the power and light weight are my favourites of the G21SF, and it's easy for a basic cleaning, the only thing I don't like about it is the ejection port sending casings to one side as opposed to the S&W, and the standard frame is a little much. Although, I'd sell my Hi-Point, or even my Rem 700SPS, before either one of those.

My 9MM M&P 5" PRO with the Apex Competition Kit in it is one sweet gun. For IDPA SSP Division it fills the bill. The Competition Kit gives you a 2.5#/2.75# trigger that is smooth as glass with a very clean break. Out of the box the PRO has a trigger that is only slightly better than a regular M&P with a pull of around 5#'s. I put the PRO's parts in my FS 9MM and the pull fell to 4.75#'s.

PS Mike Muir? Suicidal Tendencies a singing group? I don't suppose you know who Bill Haley & The Comets were? :>)

Hi there Bob,

Just wondering where you tracked the Apex parts down at? Looking to do the same upgrade...

Thanks for the help!

Cheers
