Smoking while hunting

I dont believe smoking affects hunting.....scent control is wind direction. Putting on "no-scent" deodorant and washing your hair in baking soda is just silly........the guys that smoke know its bad for them, but they do it anyway so there is nothing you can do about it.

As for it lessening their chances at game, I doubt it makes any difference. If an animal winds you, it doesnt matter if you smell of smoke or garlic sausage, he may run or he may not.

This is nothing more than creative $hit disturbing. The smokers will say what their actual experiences are. The non-smokers will chip in with what? If they don't smoke, how could they possibly know if it affects the hunt? :roll:

BTW, its day 12 after 17years of 1-1/4 pack a day.

Well, that wasn't my intent, but if it turns out that way, the results should show the national average for smoking. (whatever that is)

I don't smoke while hunting and I do believe that it makes a difference. My uncle who smokes seems to have the deer turn while coming straight at him, the wind is the same for the rest of the group and we don't seem to bother the deer. On the other hand the smells that come from humans does not bother us but what is that smell to a deer. You think the smell of tobacco is bad if you are not used to it, the deer are not "used" to our smell, they notice the difference. The new innovations in scent control help us out in eliminating some of that but the toothpaste in the morning, the lunch you just had, the fire inside your camp, the cleaner on that chair at home even the scent from your truck must be awful to those deer.

An old smoker knows which way the winds blowing, :wink: Just when you light a smoke is when a deer pops out of the bush. You've got your lighter in your hands and your rifle across your lap. Fess up smokin hunters, I'll bet you this has happened to everyone :lol: :lol: :lol:

Try it next time, lay your gun down and light a smoke. Make sure you have a buddy beside you with his rifle ready. :?

I'm not really sure how much it may interfere. When I light up, it's on the road between two passes or 25 ft. up in my watch... Still, I kind of feel guilty each time I do it :wink:

I find the one advantage it has for me is you can see what the wind is doing even on a really calm day. I have found when you are out in the open, the wind blows in one consistent direction, but it can be different once in the bush, as a smoker I have stories dictating that it makes no difference, but that aspect may actually be helpful. I am very mindful of the wind, and after 3-4 days without a shower I think the cigarette smoke might even act as a cover scent.

I know of too many fellas that smoke on stand and have no problem shooting big animals.
My cousin chews Cope also, and he always wondered if it made a differenc efor him, seeing's how he has arrowed some true monster white tails.....

Smoke occurs naturally in nature, I think the animals are somewhat used to it.

I know of several ghuides that smoke cigars and cigarettes on STALKS, so they know which way the wind is going. They reaosn that if the animal can smell the smoke,m they can smell the human, and the human smell is wors e than smoke...

Cigarettes is one thing, what about smoking pot? How does that affect your odds of getting at game?

It hurts a bit for deer, but your chances of bagging one of those elusive four-coloured north american yodelling elephants goes waaay up.

Plus - if a deer does show up it'll actually talk to you, and it's always harder to shoot an animal you've had a conversation with. Especially when it makes such good points.

I don't get it? You mean they smoke and you don't so you won't hunt with them? or do you mean that they're physically unable to hunt because they smoked and are now sick? or what?
