Smoking while hunting

Does smoking interfere with a good hunt?

I smoke never seen anything while smoking but that could be because I only smoke when I know nothing is around. Like after the animal is down or we haven't seen anything. I don't think it makes that much difference. The reason I don't smoke is usually cause I'm out of breath from the hike and a smoke makes it worse. Yeah I know I'm outta shape

Here in the UK the British deer Society actually recommend smoking as an aid to checking wind direction, it doesnt seem to affect the deer at all, I have taken a pee out of a high seat only to have a doe wander under only 10 minutes later not bothered at all. It seems that deer arent bothered by most of the stuff we are! Fieldcraft as in good steady slow movement and knowledge of your prey and the area you are hunting in seems to be far more important! In the Deer stalkers test one of the questions is related to cigarette smoke and as a non smoker I was surprised to read it has no effect upon them!

I don't get it? You mean they smoke and you don't so you won't hunt with them? or do you mean that they're physically unable to hunt because they smoked and are now sick? or what?

Died of lung cancer would be my guess.

1 Emphasema and 1Cancer, both directly a result of smoking.

I really don't know about cigarette smoke, but I am convinced that wood smoke is a good maybe excellent cover scent. Our old camp had a wood cook stove, we all reeked of wood smoke after the first week. I think it played a big part in why we were always more successful second week.

It does bug me though, when I'm dogging through, and I can tell who is on what watch by the stench of the stuff they are filling their lungs with. It's amazing how accurate you can pinpoint where the person is standing by the wind, and the strength of the cigarette smoke smell.

I shot a coyote on a bait pile last year at a range of 17 yards. The funny thing was , I had just given up on the hunt, lit a smoke and poured a hot cup of Tim's from the thermos. That old yote never knew I was there as I put out the smoke, set down the coffee and picked up the rifle.
BTW , day 22 from a 20 year 1 pack a day habit. Nerves starting to settle down .

Foxer, I think he means they have passed...I'm sorry for your loss :( But even if you are smoke-free, do sports, watch your colesterol, wear a hat and sun lotion, don't eat BBQ (some say the smoke from the dripping fat causes cancer), and what ever else they may come up with YOU WILL DIE SOMEDAY ! It may be at 15, 40, 60 or 80 years old from cancer or a bus splattering your guts on the road. Get over it and live your life to the max while you are still here so you won't die with any regrets. "Everyone who lives dies, but not everyone who dies has lived". Have any of you listened to Tim McGraw's " Live like you were dying " song :?: I know I'm off topic so I'll shut up now :)

What a stupid poll!

Good for you, 'cause right now, you are ahead of the 'game';)

Ahead of 'the game' in both senses----in life and in wild game hunting

Keep it up and you will be able to enjoy 'Both' to their fullest' :)

Why smoke in the first place

Reading this like the Liberals read polls :D
So far 65.3% of you figure that smoking while hunting is not a good idea.
34.7% are gonna smoke, and hate my guts for starting the poll.

I have mixed feelings on how it affects game myself. Smoke moves downwind, like your scent. It's powerful, I can smell a smoker at 100 yards, and sometimes pinpoint his position by wind direction, and listening for his movements.

BUT
Deer may react totally differently.
They may be curious of the new scent.
They may asociate it with man.
They may ignore it
They may run from it.
Maybe all of the above could be true depending on the circumstances, and the individual deer.

I'm smoker, but I can go all day without one as long as I have my morning smoke. So I don't smoke when I'm hunting. One thing that drives me nuts is seeing butts in the bush. Bring em out with ya!

As long as your downwind, I don't think it would make a difference if your smoking or not.

i am an ex smoker and my results have improved but i'm not sure if it is my attitude which is more positive because i feel better or because i put more time in scouting or if it's because i don't smell of smoke?
