Anyone aware of a Canadian source for a smooth bore musket kit? Im really interested in getting a smooth bore, but cannot shell out the cash for brand new/already built one.

Seems to me there are two places in Canada with cheaper smoothbore rifles, but I don't recall if either sold kits. Loyalist Arms? is one (I think), and maybe someone can come along and name the other.

Pedersoli sells their muskets in kit form but you would have to get Marstar to order you one in and they aren t that much cheaper than the ready made ones to make a big difference

Just order the new Kibler Fowler. You won’t be disappointed. Or if your handy buy the parts from Track Of The Wolf and build your own.

If you can afford the kibler fowler, you won't be disappointed.
They ship to Canada by postal service so no broker fees, no problem receiving in Canada, easy to assemble, and quantity is first rate.
I put one together and love it. Fast possative ignition, and a real head turner.

While I have never held a ski let kit, I am familiar with them and they are quite nice. They ARE pricy but anything of quality will be. The other option is a Chambers kit. These are also excellent quality but require a bit more fitting than the kibler that is made on a CNC machine. Either one would be a good piece worth the price. If you have any skills at all for fitting and assembling such a kit, you can’t go wrong with a Chsmbers. If you have basically no skill/ability, the Kibler would be the ticket as they are more “stain, finish and assemble”. IMO. Buying parts from a vendor like track of the wolf (or even a “kit”) will be cheaper yet but will require more ability and effort to finish with a decent, quality smoithbore. Having said all that, these are all for “smooth bores” not “muskets”. I have a chambers 29GA smooth bore that I finished for my Dad maybe 25-30 years ago. Very nice kit.

Does anyone else come close to the affordability of the Traditions DIY kit that Cabelas sells?
Doesnt matter, those Traditions designs quickly get you wishing youd just bought a quality piece from the start. I bought my Kentucky rifle for only 450 years back, i see there in the 800s now at Cabelas... an absolutely rediculous price for how mediocre they are.

Loyalist Arms..
For $405, on their clearances, you can buy an unfinished factory-second East India Company pattern Brown Bess. The bores are undersized and therefore rejected. Not a complete firearm, just all the parts for one and the buyer drills the flash hole.

Just sent an e-mail last night regarding these Brown Bess muskets with the smaller bore (hell, for $405 I figured why not?), but they're all gone.

If the Traditions rifles are crappy, are there any other alternatives at a similar price point? The Traditions kit is ~$500 (Saw 'em on sale at Cabelas a week or two ago for under $500) whereas the other kits I've looked at over on Track Of the Wolf are more like $900USD++.

I see Track of the Wolf has some Investarms kits for sub-$600usd, but they're out of stock so who knows how up to date that price is. Does anyone else make a kit in that kind of ballpark, or is there nothing worth bothering with until you get up above the $1k price point?

The good quality kits are definitely worth the money. Nowadays if you want to build a gun, you can expect to pay $500+ USD for just a high quality barrel and lock.

You would be doing very well indeed to get a good quality lock and barrel for $500.00 USD. On top of the roughly 40% exchange rate, there is shipping and Cdn. taxes.
