Sniper Challenge

Thanks for the reply LRCanuck. Just getting antsy is all, due to this cold weather and not getting out to the range as much as I'd like. I have this fancy new rifle and haven't even shot it yet! It's driving me crazy!!

Alexik we are setting up the match 1.5hrs north of Edmonton. We are not releasing the exact location until all is finalized. It is in the Newbrook Alberta area.

Great!!!
What do we need to get in on this?
What time periods?
What are min requirements?
Fees?

If we fly in, is there a group organizer etc...

I am speaking on behalf of at least 4 and up to 7 friends
WE ARE TOTALLY INTERESTED

You can PM myself or Jimbo if you need specific information, most of it is already up but scattered through out this thread. Register as a team, specifying designated spotter, designated sniper. You will play that role for the enitre match. It is a team event so slot prefferences will be given to those that register as a team.

We are still working out logistics and details so no fee has been set as of yet. Closest airport will be Edmonton with @ 2hr drive north from the airport to shoot location. There are small town motels in the area aproximately 20 minutes to the shoot location. We would like to encourage all to utilize camping as we have a great spot at the location, Jimbo is an excellent Chef who works miracles with IMP's (MRE's to you Yank's) might even have a few pigs on a spit. We are also trying to source some Bell Tents, Cabin Tents or military type mess tents for those that don't mind to ruff it a bit and are not equiped with tents.

For the 2KM+ shoot Jimbo has informed me he has a new remote cammera system that will transmitt wirelessly for 7km. Instant target verification!! saves alot of miles on horseback checking targets to verify hits this will speed up the match significantly and enable us to put more rounds down range.:D

As we get more planning complete we will post a general course of fire outline with aproximate round count and ranges to be expected. (actually I can tell you target ranges will be 50-1200 meters for the main match events, and @ 2,000-2400 meters for a special event we have planned.) On the jungle trail event spotter engagements from as close as 10 yrds + with a sniper engagement past 1,000yrds.......why do i speak in meters and yards....it makes no difference because you will have to range accurately your own targets, ranges in what ever format works best for your team....back on topic. We will also put out a match rule book, with rules that will be strictly enforced for match safety, as well as put out a list of close motels for accomodation. Registration forms will also be posted with the complete package as we near completion of the planning. We are shooting to have this done by the end of Febuary. Please be patient.

6.5x47 is banned eh? Maybe I'll just screw on a 308 barrel, keep the 6.5 barrel in my pack and when out in bush make the swap. HA! Or are you just going to ban any calibre that my rifle is chamber for? :ban::slap:

:D just ball bustin! sweet rig, should work good for you. You should put that on some coyotes.

Hey thanks! It's my first custom build from start to finish.

I know you're just bustin. I'm just playing along. There should be emoticon for ball busting though.

Coyotes wasn't what I had in mind when I built it but nothin saying I can't.

Nice stick Hend!!

Unfortunetly, This is what a 6.5X47 should look like!! ;)

65Safeway006.jpg

Agreed. If a 308 can do it then a 6.5x47 will do it. The bullet will still be supersonic at that distance and all we need is a hit, not a kill. Though I'm not saying it won't be challenging. The 6.5 can do it but can I? Probably not.

The bullet will make the trip, if not blame your spotter:p I watched Mystic take his .223 to 1760yrds. Take the rifle out, learn your dope out to 1400 then all ya got to worry about is wind, weather corrections, me and Jimbo's twisted ideas to torture the shooters :D

This is a competition, but take advantage of the ranges you will have the oportunity to shoot and the value of what you will learn competing against yourself and your personal comfort levels. Those that challenge themselves will come away with a bigger reward than those chasing a first place trying to beat a clock and playing it safe. If you can do both you are a true master :sniper:

What do you mean Twisted. Just because I want all Ontario,BC, and Saskatchewan competitors to wear Bullseye teeshirts does not seem unreasonable.

Here is a brief rundown on the course of fire. We have put alot of thought and had recieved alot of great input from some great people. This is as much detail on the daily events as we are going to release prior to the actual shoot. We fully expect this to raise some questions but trust us when we say we believe we have it covered.

Expected round count for course of fire will be announced after we do a dry run and timing on the events. The more time, the more rounds down range...mostly in the Battlefield and Jungle trail event.

Warning.....expect the unexpected, be prepared to adapt to the unexpected , we have put together a great group of twisted minds and we fully expect to traumatize many individuals and expect some to be seeking PTSD councelling after. Aslo be assured SAFETY has been our number 1 concern in planning so as twisted as we are, it will be a very safe match. We are hoping to piss off the agressive by the book compeditors and challenge the finest profesionals.

The Rules posted are general rules, more details will be available when the shoot packages are complete. There are mandatory briefings prior to each event that will detail the individual event rules, no need to address those here at this time....plus we dont want to give you too much prep time. :D

NUFF SAID!! Read on.

Alberta Sniper Challenge 2012
General Rules

Camp Ground:
This is private land that has been generously provided to the participants. Treat it with utmost respect and remove everything you bring.

Use the designated Latrine area. If you have a self contained camper do not dump your sewage tanks on the property when leaving. There is a camper dump station a few miles down the road.

There is a wide assortment of wild life in the area, some good eating, some that like to eat you. Place garbage in designated areas and maintain a food and waste safe environment. A match official will have a shotgun available for wildlife deterrence if the need arises this will be the only “Live” firearm allowed in the camping area. Wildlife distraction and deterrence will be handled with non lethal devices if the need arises.

Firearms in camp must be unloaded at all times, stored securely and only handled in the designated safe zone. We encourage you to show off and share your firearms in camp, but this will be done in a designated safe area with no ammunition. Any one found with a loaded firearm in the camp area other than a match official for wildlife control, will be immediately requested to leave and disqualified from the match.

Consumption of alcohol is allowed in the camp area only. Regulate your consumption as anyone deemed unfit by officials will be disqualified from the day’s event.

General Range Rules
1. All firearms will be unloaded with actions open, magazines removed at all times when not on the firing line or engaged in a moving event. Any live firearm off range will result in immediate removal from the match.
2. No firearm will be loaded until the “Load” command has been given from the range officer.
3. No shooting until a “Fire” command has been given or the “Range is Hot” has been declared.
4. Upon a “Cease Fire” command all actions must be opened and firearm made safe. Shooters must move away from their firearm. The “Cease Fire” command can be given by anyone on the range that notices anything that can create a safety hazard. IE. Wildlife crossing the range, People or equipment in a hazardous area, sparks on target causing a fire etc. If anyone feels a need to call a “Cease Fire” do so immediately and have the SAFETY CONCERN addressed.
5. Upon a “Make Safe” command all actions must be opened, ammunition and magazines removed. Range officer will then call in order of the firing line. “Team 1 clear” “Team 2 clear” etc. to which you will verify “clear” Once all teams have declared clear the range officer will verify firearms and teams will leave the line.
6. “Accidental Discharge” any accidental discharge will result in the immediate removal of a competitor from the event. Strong firearms discipline will be expected. Know your firearm and its condition at all times. It is each competitor’s obligation to ensure the safety of fellow competitors and officials. Keep your firearm safe. A lot of us run light triggers on the precision rifles, I would recommend not chambering a round until ready to engage a target. Or ensuring the integrity of your safety devices.
7. Each event will have a briefing prior to starting. All competitors are expected at the event briefing. Anyone missing a briefing will be eliminated from participation of that event.

Course of Fire and Match Events

Range Estimation and Cold Bore Shot:
Each team will receive a random shooting lane by draw of the hat. Each lane will have a large selection of targets color coordinated and numbered to range. Targets are set out at various ranges from as close a 150 yards out to as far as 1200 yards. No 2 shooting lanes have targets at the same distance.

As a Sniper Spotter Team, each team must accurately range each target in their designated shooting lane. There will be a time limit on the ranging exercise and a score for ranging accuracy per target. Upon completion of the ranging exercise you will draw from a hat a target number in your shooting lane to engage from 150-1200 yards to which you will have “1” cold bore shot to be successful.

As in life nothing is fair or equal and as so, same in this event. Where one firing lane has an advantage in one zone compared to another lane, it will have a disadvantage at another zone. To a true sniper team it is not about the range of the shot, it’s about accuracy of all shots within the effective range of your firearm at any distance. This is the Challenge. Team work comes into play as the accuracy of your ranging exercise is all you have to determine your distance to targets. This accuracy will come into play for other events.

Target Identification and engagement:
The spotter will receive a description list of viable targets for his sniper to engage. The spotter must bring his sniper onto target engaging only those targets on the list. The snipers rifle scope will be set to it’s minimum power setting creating the dependency on the spotter to guide him to target. Tight teamwork will be required to be successful. During this event the spotter will be called upon to engage targets designated by the Range Officer with his support weapon. These targets will be random and at random times during this event. The sniper must disengage from his targets while the spotter is fulfilling the security role.

Ivan’s Coming, Defensive Engagement:
Welcome to the battle field. Each team will return to their firing lane to engage charging targets at multiple unknown ranges and from multiple shooting positions. Spotters will guide snipers onto target by ranging and calling corrections. The spotter will be called on to perform the security role with his support weapon on targets designate by the range officer. Sniper must disengage from his targets while spotter engages his targets.

The sniper must successfully engage targets starting with the closest prior to moving down range to engage the next. Each target zone has a specified point value with value increasing with distance. Ranges will be from in your face out to 1400yards. A team may engage with as many rounds as they like out of the match allotment any target zone as long as a hit has been made on the target in the previous closest zone. Zone 1 target will be engaged by a mandatory Standing position. Zone 2 target will be engaged by a mandatory kneeling position. Zone 3 and beyond by any position the team feels comfortable in utilizing. Shooting aids are allowed for all positions. A miss in any zone will disqualify scoring on the next furthest zone. This match will have a time limit and a maximum round count set.

Bonus: at the end of the event each team will have the opportunity to engage the “General” of the attacking force at an extended range beyond 1000yards. This will be a human sized target. Each team will be given 3 rounds to make a hit. A hit will reward the team with a large bonus point added to the match score, a miss will cost the team a penalty of points from the match score. Knowing your limits and choosing not to engage the general will not effect your match score.

DD out, It hit the fan:
In this event the spotter will take the security lead, maneuvering through the trail escorting his sniper to the extraction point, engaging hostile targets along the way and on the move. This is a shoot and scoot event. The team will move together through a designated pathway in the bush engaging open and camouflaged targets along the route. Points are awarded for each target engaged and deducted for each target missed. All kit brought to the match must be carried through this phase of the course. At the end of the trail the Sniper will have to engage an extended range target at an unknown distance. Expect suprises on the trail that can greatly alter each others role. Pay attention to detail and look for things that go Boom. This will be a timed event. Points for this course of fire will be based against course time and sniper engagement that must be engaged within the course time limit.

Canada’s Finest:

Individual Challenge: Each individual will have the opportunity to take 3 shots at a Full sized human type target at a range of 2430 meters or 2657 yards. This is to simulate to the best of our ability the incredible shots taken by Rob Furlong in Afghanistan, and give people a feel for the distance covered and the true skill utilized in making this shot. We can not come close to simulating the conditions or the environment in which the shots were taken, but hope people leave with an understanding of the skill and teamwork required to put a shot on target at those ranges.

You will have the opportunity to utilize your own rifle if you would like to bring a rifle capable of reaching that range, otherwise a .50BMG or .338 Lapua will be provided for competitors to attempt the shots. There will be a charge to cover cost of the ammunition separate from the event. The rifle scope will be set up close to engagement range but you will still need teamwork to finish dialing in or utilizing a hold over. This is a fun shoot optional experience, with no points going towards event standing.

Enjoy the match, Shoot Safe.

Event equipment & rules:
There are no restrictions on Sniper rifle size, caliber or equipment.

All firearms must be non restricted unless part of an AUTHORIZED Law Enforcement or Military Organizations approved Kit, with letters and documentation of approval from their respective organization. (please contact us for further information if you intend to bring issued kit that would fall into a restricted or other catagory .THIS IS NOT AN OPTION FOR CIVILIAN COMPEDITORS)

No handguns allowed with or without Antique Letters. (yes, it was asked:rolleyes:)

Ranging, if you own it bring it. (expect a malfunction so do your homework)

This match is not on a groomed range, Prone position may not be attainable in certain shooting lanes or events. Shooting aids are allowed.

Everything you bring to compete will have to be carried on your person for the entire duration of the event. If you use it you pack it!! In this pre planning will make you successful, or not at the end of this event. Mobility will play a timing factor that will reflect in points. All Gear, And Ammo brought will have to be carried and load shared between team members. All event time limit’s include a bug out in which all gear must be removed from the firing line to the Range Officers Station.

If time permits an open range will be set up on the final day. There will be no time for zeroing of rifles prior to the event start, come prepared, know your rifle, know your dope.

Confidentiality: In this event we are “ALL” long range enthusiasts, and that is all that matters. If anyone wishes to disclose personal memberships or affiliations in conversation, that is up to each individual to decide. Show respect to each individual’s privacy.
As many are CGN members and members of other groups we do encourage taking and posting of photographs. Please post photos with respect to individual’s privacy. If you take a photo with facial features please check with that individual for permission prior to posting the picture.

Just a quick question - for those who are volunteering and providing additional services. Would there be time or a chance to try out some of the distant shots? I would love to try to cold bore some targets in the lanes and stretch my rifle to the 2700 yard mark.

Is there a cost for the event? I don't remember reading about crappers, power, water or lot fee's ect..... All of these items have a price I would think being on a private campground.

Please provide me a quick update. Based on my PM I'm still able to provide what was listed, I just haven't heard if any of it is what you wanted or if it's even needed. Please let me know what you would like and what you can do without.

All volunteers and participants will be welcome to shoot the Canada's Finest Event. If time permits on the final afternoon we will have an open range for a few hours for people to plink at the targets at extended ranges and share toys. All range rules will apply. There will be no Spectators, this will be a closed area only open to compeditors and volunteers. We are sorry, but way to many liabilities and inconvieniances to the land owner.

Crappers :D accomodations will be made :p
Power....no we are in the toolies and this isn't a Kool Aid Drinking Wanna Be match ;).

Water yes all over the place, lakes, streams, cattle waterers, if they can drink it so can you.:p we are sourcing a bottled water supply for drinking purposes.

Yes there is a cost to this event and it will be posted in the match package once we have an accounting of total cost's . Our Chief Financial Officer Jimbo is still working out the budget and the number of teams we can accomodate. Be assured everyting will be communicated well in advance. We will also be in contact with those that offered to volunteer and gratiously offerd targets and other kit. This is just a heads up of the course of fire and basic match structure to keep ya all on the hook and let you know we are working hard.

If anyone is interested in donating prizes or match supplies please PM Jimbo as he will be actively seeking sponsors and donations to keep match costs down to the compeditors.

Thanks hope this helps clear some things up.
