Looks like someone had too much time on their hands and took a woodsaw to their No4T.

Its a Enfield L42A1. A .308 conversion of the No.4 .303.

Not in the Pas de Calais, it's not.

I've heard stories of WW1 Canadian soldiers doing it with their SMLE snipers, which is probably where he got the idea.

This same picture appears in Clive Law's book.......... he describes it as follows:

Fig 126 .... This Sergeant from the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers carries an experimental "Scout" sniper rifle. Four experimental sniper rifles were sent to the Canadian Army in North West Europe for field evaluation. At least one fell into German hands when the sniper was taken prisoner.

"...Enfield L42A1..." Nope. Like diananike says, there was no such thing as a .308 in W.W. II. I'd be betting on a 'field expedient' bubbafying by a unit armourer.
Please reduce the size of your pictures. A dial up connection will be loading this page until Tuesday.

Looks like a cutdown No4T also lacking the cheek piece. The LB expt sniper had a sporter butt. The revolver appears to be a S&W, note the shiny stock medallion.

The German officer must have realised the superiority of his own armed forces. ;)

Looks more like he's depressed about surrendering. I don't imagine it would be an easy decision to make. At least the Canadians looks fairly accomodating.

I think by that point in the war most germans realized the only choice was death
or surrender to the allies and either was preferable to surrender to the russians.
It must have been difficult to hand over your responsibility for your men to a canuk you have just met. Interestingly if you were an SS soldier who had been in a purly combat unit you were treated like a war criminal but if you were in the feild police and had spent the whole war doing summurary executions you were put to work as a cop "keeping order".

I have seen this picture before in an article. The German officer was agitated at being captured by what he considered a "non-professional army". I will try and locate the article. The officer is lucky that he is Heere, as Canadian troops were not in the habit of taking SS POW's, at that period after the incident with the Winnipeg rifles.

See if you could track that down! I'd like to have a look.
