Not a goose hunter but shouldn't the snows be up north by now? There's thousands on a small reservoir in Elgin Manitoba

We had a rather unusual migration in central saskatchewan this spring. Lots of snow geese went through just after the main snow melt, then almost nothing for a month, and now another bunch have arrived and are staging here for the last week or so. They will be gone north very soon.

It's normal for this time of year. It's the juveniles, non breeders. They bring up the rear long after the breeders have continued on. No hurry for them, they aren't nesting. We have lots here yet and lots of all species have been going through the past few days.

On the lowlands down from where I grew up, snows would appear on barren corn fields in flocks of tens of thousands sometimes, stretching off to the horizon with no edge in sight. It does seem a bit late in the year for large numbers but only by a few weeks, and it's been a very late spring here in the east. Which is to say it's still cold as hell with daily rain. Check out the flooding news.

My wife was on the phone with her sister in Ontario the other night, and the sister was talking about how it was 2 degrees at her kids' soccer practice. I laughed, 'cause it was 28 degrees here last weekend...
