So do I buy a 10.5" Norc or a 14.5" Norc - Norc AR Haters Leave Now Please...

So I'm looking to get my first AR15 and I've decided to get a Norinco. Like I said in the title, if you have issue with the Norc AR's please find another thread to post in. I'm getting one. Please don't post in here about how I should buy something "better".

I've always liked the look and "practicality" of the 14.5" Norinco AR's but on the flip side there is a lot to be said for a 10.5" AR SBR. I'm pretty torn. I'll be dressing her up in the usual Magpul attire as I'm looking to make a fun, affordable, paper punching range toy. My local range only goes out to 200 yards so it's not like I will be shooting out to 500 or anything. If I could I would probably buy the 14.5" rifle just to have a better chance at hitting a target at that distance. I have done some long range shooting in the past and I like the idea of being able to shoot some somewhat accurate groups out to 200 but at the end of the day if I can ring the gong with relative ease with either barrel I will be happy.

So Norinco AR owners... What do you think? 10.5" or 14.5"? What kind of accuracy should I expect from a 10.5" barrel at 100 yards? 200 yards?

Have the finish and ejection issues been addressed with the latest batch?

Have used both quite a bit ..get the 14.5 you will not be dissapointed :) the 10.5 is for cqb and not terribly accurate past 150m
Also the noise of the 10.5 is a bit much as well...
10.5 for 0-75m work
14.5 would comfortable yet still a challenge at 50-200m max

Of course there will be hero's that post they can shoot a million billion miles and hit a flies wings, I can see it now lol.
Truth be told, I am a collector first and a decent shooter. That being said I prefer the versatility of a bit long barrel :)

I have had all three of the norc sizes the 14.5 is the one to go with. the 10.5 is way loud and really violent flash. not as fun the shoot.
 
Well, it all depends upon what you want to use the carbine for. I have no real experience with Norinco's stuff, but do know that with a reputable AR, training and practice you can make accurate hits out to 300m with a 10.3"bbl. I have a 12.5"bbl that I have used to bang a 20" gong at 500m without trouble. If you're looking to make the rifle up like an M4 or so, go with the 14.5"bbl. If you're thinking about a CQBR/Mk18 sort of thing, the 10.5"bbl is for you.

One thing to consider is what flash suppressor/muzzle brake you throw on it. A brake will help mitigate the recoil effects, but will not make you any friends if you stack up... I use flash suppressors on mine instead, the Mk18 has the DD standard flash suppressor and the Mk112 has a triad.

I had the 10.5. You can go on ballistics by the inch and compare the velocities. I was shooting mine out to 300 meters. The limit of my range and it worked fine. If you are looking at longer range shooter. Faster is better as their is less time in flight and wind will have less of an effect on the trajectory. If it is just for plinking or 3 gun pick up which ever you fancy.
 
If you have the extra money, maybe buy the 14.5 and get a 10.5 upper as well. That way you will have both to try and you can sell the one upper you don't like.

That back fired for me though :). I liked both and ended up buy a lower to have two complete rifles.
 
I was in the same vote. Just ordered the 10.5 because I already have rifles that will reach out to the furthest distance at any range in Ontario. Just want to put a quality red dot on it and use it on the 50-100 yd ranges and the action range. Either or would do.....the 10.5 just looks cooler.

I personally don't have an AR *yet*, but I'm with you, I don't mind the Norinco guns at all. I've shot a few peoples and they performed to my satisfaction for something that is a 'range only toy'. I really like the 14.5 Dominion Arms model that already has the front rail on it etc.. I have a 14.5 and love it. Accurate as anything else on the market ! This gun does NOT get enough Credit. It runs like a champ. Have tried the 10.5 and enjoyed it as well.
 
Having owned Norcs in both flavours (the nice thing about Norcs is you can actually own 2 without being invited to sleep in the garage for a while), I'd say buy the one that you feel makes you look the coolest. Accuracy out to 250-300 is very similar, reliability should be the same (mine was 100% for both), so after you've dealt with those 2 all that's left is the critical "how cool will I look with this at the range?". Frankly, the 10.5 rocks the cool factor. To paraphrase Tritium - "it's all about how cool you look".

There's your best answer. 4 inches out of a non-match barrel isn't going to do anything for accuracy at any reasonable distances. You may gain a bit more velocity but that's it. I have the 14.5 and I love the sh!t out of it and its never failed me yet. However I am building a 10.5 in the coming future. Whatever gives you more look cool factor points should be the deciding factor in my oppinion.
 
I buy guns to shoot, not to be "cool". Might as well just get an airsoft if you're only using it to pose for selfies. :)

I would go for the 14" because it balances better IMO but it depends on what accs you bolt on. Considering it will be used at 200 yds and under, 4" wouldn't make or break a deal. I didn't see much dfference except i found the 10.5 a bit too muzzle light, and that would be fairly easy to overcome.

Thanks for all of your responses. I don't know why but if I were to pony up for a top of the line LWRC or Daniel Defense I'd definitely be getting a 10.5" version. I do really like the way the 14.5" CQA looks all done up. There are some good deals on the 10.5" CQA which is really tempting though.

Anyone have any photos of a Magpulled 10.5" CQA? The Norc AR #### thread doesn't seem to have any.

I think at this point I'm leaning towards the 10.5". I've never owned an SBR or an AR some I could really kill two birds with one stone here :)
 
have handled a 10.5" norc CQa, but I own a 14.5" version and I love it, i'm happy with the choice and think its a good "all around" length.
 
i have had a 14.5 since they brought them in. this was the first batch one. been great, shot many thousand of rounds through it without issue. Paint finish on the early ones sucked, but once it wore off, i stripped it down, and painted it pink and white, like hello kitty for the wife. lol
