Went for a hike in the snow this morning in my back yard...

then these...

And sure enough, treed and barely visible, a turkey. We've never seen turkeys around here, and I am just amazed. He/she was pretty shy, but when I came back to my place, I could see in the snow that the turkey was hanging around my chicken coop. Perhaps they need a date?

what kind of beer do you like? so I know what to bring when I stop by and visit this May ;)

I went for a hike above winfield today. I found garbage and coyote tracks. you win. :)

Did anyone have success this spring for the turkey season? Heard of a couple of locals getting birds, but no travelling weekend warrior successes.

No, the bird is not lost. They have been making a comeback in the area, hence the hunting season.

A buddy (and a member here) saw them on Mount Baldy last fall, but no one to my knowledge has seen them west of the Valley. I've moved my trail cam and will post if I get any nibbles....

Gotta love a guy that loves single malt...even if he does not let you hunt his land. :)

Best of luck with the turkey population. They can rebound at amazing speed.
They were extinct in Ontario, only a few years ago, and now, after re-introduction, have expanded well beyond their original range. Tons of birds, seemingly everywhere.
Look forward to good hunting!

There's a bunch just south of Kaslo, and I have seen tracks near the Bridesville/Baldy area but I've been trying to find one in the South Okanagan and haven't yet. Still going to try come spring though, and then in the fall and then in the spring and eventually, there will be enough of them for even me to find one.

Saw a really nice wild boar on the west side of Oliver a while back, by the stamp mill eating apples... but it was one of the few times we didn't have even a .22 in the truck and it was too big to use my folding knife. I admit to a little fear in the idea of attacking it with my pocket knife. :)

I love these non-conventional species around for hunting :)

low Mt. KoBau, go up Fairview, turn left at the screwy corners not far up... can't remember the name of the creek you drive through, continue on for a while till you are above about Tinhorn. It's an old mining ruin.

There are apple trees around that area from a long time ago. If you go up Orifino creek road, at the start of Willowbrook, you will find nice (but small fruit) wild apricot trees, but probably no pigs. Never seen one up there and I would have.

If you go up farther between the Orifino and Taylor lake areas, you may find pigs as the Surprise ranch had a lot of escapees. You may be more likely to find them on the observatory side though, hard to say.

Surprise ranch was the old boar farm? That's been shut down for more than a few years, right? I rode my KLR up Orofino a few times - didn't see much other than a messy hunt camp that left their grouse guts and wings scattered all over the place with left over garbage.

I would love to see a boar. What would be the regs on a feral, previously farmed pig? Shoot on site?

Anywhere your method of killing it is legal, it is legal..

Short of being in the farmers pen of course.

If shooting is legal, you are. Feral animals are bad.

And the stamp mill is at about 49 degrees 09' 03.62" N by 119 degrees 36' 19.93"W

Give or take a bit.. you go there and you will find it. It's mostly just some masonry ruins now but you will see the apple tree I was talking about.

Your buddy has them in his back yard too. I just got back from california on monday and checked my trail cam. Cow and a calf moose and 3 turkeys scratching at my bait pile .
