So, how do you deal with Anti's you "meet" in the field?

Hey Guys;

I had an interesting experience on Friday evening... A friend and I were sitting along the shore of the St.John river hunting ducks, decoys out, full camo on us, including face masks... A "gentleman" comes "rowing/paddling" along with his two dogs running the shoreline...

This guy stopped right in the decoys to say that he didn't like us being there, that he felt it was unwise and unsafe... And that he didn't want to get shot or have his dogs shot... I responded to his comments with "My shotgun is no more dangerous than that paddle you have there, IN THE WRONG HANDS!!!"

He then asked me if I was "hungry", and WHY would I kill ducks... He actually offered me money to NOT HUNT in this spot... I responded with, "MY hunting privledges are NOT for sale at any price..." I hunt for the sport, relaxation, excercise and friendships...

He then asked how old I was, and what gauge the shotguns were... I replied to both, asking him how old HE was... I also told him that it was OBVIOUS to me that he was NOT a hunter and NOT a gun owner and that we would NEVER agree on the issue before us...

He was VERY disturbed by the total camo we were wearing, especially the facemasks. To which I said that ducks are NOT colour blind and we were legally allowed to be where we were, dressed as we were and I even offered to call the Department of Natural Resources on my cell phone to confirm the legality of what we were doing...

I was thinking of telling him that HE was commiting a crime by disrupting a LEGAL hunt, but continued with the "debate"... In the end, about 10 or 15 minutes were spent "debating" with this guy... It was obvious that he just didn't "see" our point of view, so I actually told him that statistically HE was more of a danger to himself on the water in his canoe with no lifejacket on, then we were sitting on shore with firearms...

After that, he replied "I doubt your statistics..." and left... I kinda expected the cops to be at the truck when I got back or DNR, but no one was there...

Anyhow, I am sure you guys have had simular experiences, how did you deal with them???

I know what you mean but, what if the cops were there, what would that mean ... can anybody just "call the cops" and they will come and everybodys time gets wasted, or do the cops have some way of weeding out the nut calls? What if every time you went hunting, "the cops were at the truck"? Try not to be threating to these, "lefties", they probably use any excuse to "call the cops". Your use of the legal argument sounds like it worked.

yup we had a issue similar at a ferry terminal while heading to a hunting spot, were wearing camo coats and got the riot act but then foxer locked me in the truck well he dealt with it so he will have to tell the story :D
 
While I've never had an anti experience like this one you've mentioned Jay, I have had a couple. I'd just tell them that I wasn't going to judge them and their actions so why should they be judging mine. I'd go on to say that while firearms can be dangerous if handled improperly that they were no more dangerous than a baseball bat or any other everyday item for example. They have always accepted a "truce" and let me be.
 
I would take a close look at what they wear, any leather etc. Ask 'em what they eat , if they eat meat , tell 'em they hire folks to kill for them. If they eat that tofoul ####, tell 'em animals must die in order for this #### to make it to their table. And the list goes on , their idiots , the whole ####en lot. :)
 
Politely, don't debate with them. Tell them simply what you are doing is legal and what they are doing (disrupting the hunt) is illegal.

That said I am from Alberta and it isn't commmon here. Did you hear??? Ralph is legalizing shooting road signs from a moving vehicle?? Bout time. Hate those fines.
 
Well it is truly sad how some people feel the need to interject at any opertunity they get. If I were to have been in the situation I would probably handled it the way you did Jay, now that you are doing everything legally before you head out have phone numbers ready incase someone is willing to be proven wrong, and most of all do not treat these people with disrespect that is the last thing out sport needs...
 
To anti's I encounter, I ask them this. "So if guns are so bad, what would you do if someone is breaking into your home?".

Almost everytime I get the answer "Call the police!", I then say, "oh its because they have a gun isnt it?", this just shuts them up and I walk away.

Ontario is just lousy with anti-hunters. I've yet to meet one who'd actually consider our side of the argument regardless of what you bring up.

You handled it well by just humouring him until he left.

What a tool...:rolleyes: Poor ducks, ending their life with a shot to the chest instead of pain from bird flu and starvation.
 
Jay, Just for information info incase I land in the same spot on the river, where abouts were you hunting? I try avoid areas where non hunters are the using the same area, not so much cause I can't legelly hunt there but just to avoid the hastle of an argument with somebody that can't be reasoned with.
