So, how do you deal with Anti's you "meet" in the field?

I would ask him to leave immediately or suffer the consequences.
If he continued to harrass me I would ask him if he was familiar with Part II section 13-A of the Fish and Game Act of Ontario that states that placing himself or herself in a position, for the purpose of interfering, that hinders or prevents hunting is illegal and he is breaking the law.
Then I would tell him that I am making a citizens arrest and that he must remain until the police and or game wardens arrive. I would use any reasonable force neccessary to keep that person from leaving until the authorities arrived!

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, held that a citizen's arrest at common law allows for a use of "reasonable force". This includes reasonable force necessary to undertake the arrest and maintain it.

I'm serious.

At work a guy has asked me why I was interested in obtaining my PAL and owning firearms, he followed that up with "nobody should be allowed to own guns". I decided that debating him would pointless as he is obviously so closed-minded that I could not possibly change his ignorance. I simply followed up his comments with "oh yes, that's right, because guns can only be used in a harmful manner...". Sarcasm can work wonders if used properly - ha.
I was lucky to have another gun owner in the room who was able to back me up.

I would do as BIGREDD says. And not get involved in a debate either.

I don't go anywhere without my digital camera these days and I would have snapped a picture or two to let the fella know you're serious. The video feature works quite well also.

too true...was loading up 3 rifles (into the car) the other day in front of the house and a lady walking a dog was giving me a funny look so I though "here we go"...she stopped and looked at me and said "Going for goose? Deer season doesn't open for a few weeks?"..I just smiled and said "off to the range for practice"..she smiled back and said "have a good day shooting"...

god I love it here :D

when I have a rifle in my hands and a mask on my face they stop and talk, ask, argue.
It is only when I take the mask of... that they run away..... must be those puffy cheeks....:runaway:

Had a co-worker say to me once that we shouldnt be able to kill animals, and if we miss kill a tree. F**k that and f**k you bud!

Never had any problems with antis in the field, and Ontario is sickening with the amount of them.

I know what you mean but, what if the cops were there, what would that mean ... can anybody just "call the cops" and they will come and everybodys time gets wasted, or do the cops have some way of weeding out the nut calls? What if every time you went hunting, "the cops were at the truck"? Try not to be threating to these, "lefties", they probably use any excuse to "call the cops". Your use of the legal argument sounds like it worked.

My friend and I had an experience with the cops several years back, not hunting but fishing. Here we are in the middle of a river with hip waders and fishing poles, and some local police officer (with the Peel Regional Police dept.) comes up to the shore and asks what we were up to. He didn't look much over 15 years old and had badge number 3 million and something.

I casually told him we were launching a moon rocket. (What the hell did it look like we were doing?) He didn't like that, and then demanded to see our fishing licence.

To which my friend replied, "Sure, come on over and have a look."

Not wanting to wade into the river, he demanded to see it again "or else" to which again said friend replied that, under Ontario regs, only a constable with the MNR or with the OPP had any jurisdiction with the inspection of hunting or fishing licences.

Dumbstruck, the kid just offered a confused, "oh.." and walked away.

Now whether or not we were right I never did check in detail, but it sure worked that day!:D

Ontario is just lousy with anti-hunters. I've yet to meet one who'd actually consider our side of the argument regardless of what you bring up.

You handled it well by just humouring him until he left.

WHERE are these "anti's" you speak of??? I can't seem to find any..and honestly...I've looked!! I work in a Fed Public Service Headquarters...for 8 years....and I can't find ANY!!

I can't speak for Toronto (downtown), but I know there's alot of hunters from there. I meet them every year moose hunting.

Rural Ontario, is about as hunting as you can get. And I've lived here for 35 years.

So, if you want to base your assumptions on anti-hunting crap, then go talk to the source. (PETA, Jack Layton) You're going to get anti's in BIG populations. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver. You don't get anti's living in f*ing Robuck!!

Sorry, but all this anti-Ontario propaghanda BS, from whatever sources you guys retrieve it from gets really tiresome after a while.

Well first of all, Jay is in New Brunswick, so quoting Ontario law whilst making a citizens arrest might just be a recipe for disaster. Secondly, how was Jay to use "reasonable force" while making such an arrest? The guy was in a canoe in the middle of the river, was Jay to swim out and hold the canoe? Hold him at gunpoint? Hold the dogs hostage?

Making a citizens arrest while you are armed and the potential violator is not smacks of vigilantism and would do no good. While I think the particular anti in this case is a clown, I think Jay handled it well.

You can be in the right and still have to defend yourself, you know. If Jay had done what you are condoning, he might have been charged. While he may have eventually proved his innocence, I would not fancy his legal bills. Sometimes, discretion and a soft word is the better part of valour.

Depends where you are. Some years ago a friend and I were hunting groundhogs on his farm in southwestern Ontario and a woman from a nearby trailer park came to the fence and started yelling at us, threatening to call the police.

In due course an OPP came by and when we spotted him we unloaded and stepped away from the rifles. He was decent, asked us a few questions, confirmed that we were on my friend's land and we both showed him our hunting licences.

When he looked at my rig he asked about it and I told him it was a 6mm PPC Sako, one of the very first in Canada at the time. His eyes lit up and he said he was just starting out in benchrest shooting and shot a .222. I offered to let him try my rifle and handed him a few rounds.

The look on the woman's face from the other side of the fence when the copper popped of a couple of rounds was priceless and she never bothered us again.:D

The government doesnt care if you have a gun in Toronto, you can even CCW

So long as you are jamaican or something....I think it is a newer law from the Bob Rae era......

I think you will run into dicks no matter where you are. I, fortunately haven't had the pleasure of meeting any total "Anti's". (Probably good, I'd just tell the to go 4uck themselves!)

I have met alot of granolas, however. A couple are good friends of ours. (And yes, I pick on them all the time!) They don't denounce hunting though, and are more than willing to come over if I invite them for a steak.

Dude.....that was my wife. :D

A buddy and myself were target shooting in a gravel pit at the end of a dead end road . No other way in or out . On the way in , about 3 miles from the pit there was a car parked on the side of the road but we paid it no attention . The gravel pit has a sand bluff about 30 feet high and over 200 yards long opposite to the direction you drive in so everything was safe .

We stopped shooting for a coffee break and noticed two middle aged people walking towards us on the road but 100's of yards away . When they got to us we had a very pleasant conversation and discussed the good blueberry crop that year as both of them had baskets filled with berries .

I told them that we had noticed there car way back on the road and asked them if they wanted a ride back . They declined the offer saying that they had moved thier car and now it was only about 1 mile back . I offered them coffee and both had a cup and the conversation continued . Niether of them had ever shot a gun before so i offered them the oppertunity . They didn't feel like shooting but the lady commented on how nice my 10/22 was . They bid us farewell and both walked back the logging road . Truely nice people .

Buddy and i pack our gear up in my truck a few hours later and i dropped him off at his place . I wasn't home 5 minutes when 3 OPP cars rolled into my driveway . The nice people had taken my liscence plate number and reported us for shooting at them and thier car .

Since it was still early evening and light out i offered to take the OPP to the exact location and told them that once they see it , it would be easy to see that the claim of us shooting at them and thier car was totally impossible . I explained the location , the conversation and the circumstances .

One of the OPP officers said that it wouldn't be necessary to go to the location because this couple was well known to them and in fact , the previous week this nice couple had called the OPP because a neighbours cat had walked across thier lawn .

Had the nice couple been credible or the OPP officers in a bad mood this could have turned out very nasty .

We were safe , we were right but it could have cost us 10 grand in legal fees to prove it and get our guns back .

I must say that you showed just the kind of dignity and mannerism whorthy of a true sportsman and a kind person. I must wonder though; did the cops NOT press charges against these two bozzos for falsefrying (spell check please) statements to the authorities. Sounds to me like a pretty serious offence worthy of such. Furthermore, if the cops did not press charges, did you? This is pretty serious stuff that could easily and quickly have gone south for you. I know that I definetely would ponder over that myself, I mean think of the potential consequences to you and your family, what about the embarassment of having 3 cruisers out front. Anyways, I'm glad to see it turned out OK for you.
