So, how do YOU open that 7.62x39 crate???(Crate Opening for Dummies.)

Nobody laugh.... at the dollar store they sell a mini crow bar for a dollar or two. The damn little thing works great, the claw end pulls up the tabs and the pointy end into the rings then either pull or twist.

Thanks!! I think twisting would be better.

I never thought of that. I figured, WTF!!?? Put on gloves, stuck my finger in one and ripped the tab open. Moved on to the next, same deal, (hurt my finger and if I am totally honest, may have hurt my back). When I grabbed the third one and started to pull, it came off in my hand, I went ass over tea kettle and cut my head open. LOL!! Pried up the end, locked on the vise grips, and tore the damn thing off! Unbelieveable. They actually soldered this thing shut...contemplated that...now I will twist and roll up the next one, already waiting to be opened next year.

It may not be pretty, but it opens an ammo can like butter. :p

Use a simple hammer, stick hammer prongs in the loop on the pull tab and yank.

Voila open in matter of seconds.

You all make this REALLY damn complicated.

To add to that, standard C7/M16/ect bayonet's wire cutter, does the job too.

Every one seems to have their own way and tool to do the dirty deed.

I took a crow foot socket, placed it on a 3/8 extension and turned my socket wrench just like opening a can of sardines. Little to no effort, did not hurt my back or sliced a finger off.

7.6x54R crate

Just recieved my first ever crate of milsurp ammo; 780 rounds of Czech 7.62x54R. DHL dropped at a local parts store where my friend works. I opened the lid on the crate and wondered how I was gonna get into the sardine can:confused:. Then my friend who kinda reminds me of Shrek just slaps one hand on top of the tin and with the other hand just peels the soldered strips off the thing like they were scotch tape:eek:. So I gave him 5 boxes;;) good to have friends like this IMO:D.

I just grabbed one of these cases and noticed the tin in mine appears to have four seams. Might make for a neater opening.

i dont see how there is a problem here ive opened meny cases ...grab the ring and pul//if the ring brakes off get vise grips amd pull (if you dont own vise grips go buy some sheeessshh) if that dont work roll as perscribed in post 1 like a sardine can or torch if you like ...could be more exiting tho

Ryan, doesn't everyone in PEI remind you of Shrek?? :p

I've had crates with weaker solder joints that just peel off by hand, and others that I've used the screw driver through the loop and pull method. Have yet to see a tab break off :)

sks ammo

thanks for the heads up, ive got a case on its way to my place, and i never thought it would be that complictated

hmmmm it was a combination of beer & brute strength for me & my friend..... oh and lots of swearing....... it did the trick :D

we pulled the rings hard enough to get a lil crack & then used a big screw driver to pry it carefully...... not the most energy efficient way but i dont have any normal vise grips :(

I have this vision of a Czech drill sergeant firing an Vz.58 over the heads of new recruits screaming "Faster, faster" as they try to open those tins with bayonets and their bare hands.

I could have that visual as well. But in my version, the D.I. might have seen a bootleg copy of "Heartbreak Ridge" and would be brandishing a 16 and yelling "This is the Colt M-16 assault rifle! It is the preferred weapon of your enemies! It makes a very distinctive sound when fires at you!" :ar15:

Goos tutorial, I'm just about to tie into one of the cases I bought a while back. The last one I picked up was already opened.

The pics are great but I wonder what the time frame was?

Short tempered obsessive compulsive people like me do it with brutal force in around 5 minutes. Should have tried the Shrek method, maybe for the next box, will see, ...
