So I gotta ask..... Why so many 1911's?..... Part II

You don't really believe that if GLOCKS were available back then, they still would've went with a 1911 ? I like 1911's as much as the next guy, but come on. I believe any soldier given a choice between the 1911 and a GLOCK , would pick the Tupperware all day long.

Check out other American Firearms forums. Even the 1911 forums. Most do not have a 1911 in the nightstand. It's almost always something else.

The the 1911 is great for what it was/is......but it is far from the ideal Pistol to have when you need it to go bang everytime.

Sure... that's why it's the pistol of choice for many special forces operators...

A modern non-sporting 1911 is dead reliable, a highly tuned IPSC open gun not so much. For a self/defense gun, stay away from match chambers, be very careful of the mods you do if any.

Lol, that list gets smaller every day.

I think the USMC has some specially built for them and the FBI HRT has one built. They cost about 2500.00 each. Other than that....Sig's are starting to take over.

Now, again for the record. I enjoy 1911's. My point is, as far as a duty or carry Pistol, it's time has come. It's not the end all and be all of .45 ACP pistols.
My Sig Fastback Nightmare was the best shooting Pistol i've EVER had the pleasure of firing. But, it's not the one i'd grab if someone was in the house.

I think the reason 1911's suck so much, is simply because they're too complicated. I think James Yeager said he has never seen a 1911 finish one of his courses without it screwing up, and I believe it. Every time I'm at the range and I see some dude having issues, it's because he has a remington firearm, norinco, SKS, or 1911.

They do look ###y though, but I'll take a glock any time over a 1911

Rob Pincus has actually offered to pay your ammo and waive his fee if you can complete a two-day course with him with a 1911 and it suffers no mechanical faults or user errors regarding the manual of arms. While you can't blame the 1911 platform for the second part, I guess since he's teaching purely self-defense shooting it has to count for something.

Personally, I like other people owning 1911s. They are fun to shoot.

So where's the plastic in today's U.S. and Canadian militaries?

Hah our pistols were made in 1944, the US has Berettas that replaced the worn out 1911's they had. Likely our next pistol for mass issue will be plastic.

I always read how unreliable 1911's are from those who don't like them. Anecdotal evidence is completely useless "I was at a range and saw a guy with a 1911 get jams blah blah" Does the guy know is arse hole from his ear hole? Has he ever cleaned it? What mags? What 1911? Is it lubed? Some people just don't/can't take care of their stuff!

I have several and other than a reload that was deformed I have had ZERO malfuntions in any of them. I would not hesitate to grab one of MINE in a life or death situation. That being said they need a higher level of maintenance to fire 100% than modern polymer designs. In my experience they need to be clean and lubed and you are good to go. I am obsessive about cleaning and maintenance though and would clean a glock after only a hundred rounds. If you are the type that hates to clean and don't care about tinkering get a poly gun and enjoy it.

That being said as much as I love 1911's if we could carry in canada I would have a glock 19 simply for comfort reasons.

Had two Norinco 1911's while back, they are fun to own and good to shoot, not just that, very comfortable, great gun! Sold both of them, get the money and will buy another one for a long term range toy.

because they are all things to all people, a 1911 is;
-the inexpensive first pistol,or
-A high end custom.
-An affordable platform that responds well to modifications.
-It can fit large hands or small hands.
-It can chamber from 22 to 50 cal.
-You can have a long barrel or a short one.
-Regular capacity or wide body.

For me its a high end race gun that with a simple pull of a pin can go from a 40 standard gun to a 9x40 open gun that plain rocks.
My wife loves hers- classic colt 45 that fits her great.
Same platform- massively different beasts,
Whats not to like...

I've always loved the 1911 and had to get one myself, but I also have to admit that enough is enough! The whole market seems to have stagnated for the last couple of years with this ridiculous 1911 obsession. Sure, great gun. How about some NEW great guns? Why don't manufacturers bring back other classics? Maybe Colt could re-issue the Python! Then we could get S&W and Ruger replicating that classic! 5 years from now we could even have Norinco flooding the market with their rendition of it too. In the case of the 1911, too much of a good thing is...a bad thing, IMHO.

Well I think they are beautiful. Why do people collect cars? Old airplanes? Motorcycles? They certainly may not be the "best" gun for an everyday work gun but they are art and mine fire perfectly. We could also all drive smart cars (BLECHHHH) but hey they are are very efficient and do the job. Trouble is , who really wants one??? I bought a GSG 1911 .22 and fell in love with the concept and design. So now I have a .45 also and want more. To each their own but I love them. My 2 cents.
