So I handled an 870 Express at a store... and really liked it.... zombie scenario???

I was really impressed. I don't know, I thought it looked and felt really nice (the laminate and synthetic versions). Not sure what everyone is saying about it cycling so rough, felt real smooth and robust to me, and cycled very solid.... and the finish and machining looked nice to my eyes...

Why do these guns get so much flack? The way some people talk about expresses i was expecting a piece of ####, ugly, rough cycling, club. Are they really that unreliable/poory made in comparison to the wingmaster/old expresses/wingmasters?? Or are people just being snob/elitists?

I absolutely loved the synthetic version... but with everyone saying it's nothing compared to the old wingmasters, and that you should skip the express it makes me uneasy about getting one.... even though I don't particularly want a blued, wood wingmaster with a fixed choke, and lacking one of those rails ontop of the barrel (are those important?).....

Stupid question.... but it's gets to the point..... how many of you in the infamous "zombie" scenario, would trust your life to a remington express?

God I just want to buy a SG already!!!! :D

The 870 Express is fine.
But you can do better, that's why folks are recommending a Wingmaster.
If you put the two side by side you will see a difference.
Would a Zombie notice?
I doubt it. :)

I have an 870 18" express and i love it. First time taking it out today. The finish is inferior to the wingmaster but ah well..i bought my gun to shoot it not to look at it (that much :D )
though with all black it looks pretty slick, cycles fine, has the nice shotgun "sound" when you "pump" the forend...
my cat is scared of the sound it makes when you rack the forened and runs under my bed, if that's at all good. :D

If you have held a Wingmaster, particularly one made more than 20 years ago, you would immediately see the "shortcomings" of the current generation of the Express guns.

That said, they are still the Ford F-150 of the shotgun world, and I love mine just fine!

I just bought the 18" version and I love it. Took it out to the range, and it handled marvelously. I found the action more than smooth enough, and it fed and fired with absolute reliability as fast as I could rack the slide.

Very happy with it!

Like with just about anything...you can nit pick things to death.

If you continue to weigh things out you will never end up buying & enjoying anything. Bottom line....buy what you like/want and enjoy. I would have been happy with an 870 Express but really wanted a 14"bbl SG. So I spent a little more money and bought a Fabarm. As long as it goes "Boom" when I pull the trigger, I'm happy.

Bah!
Get yourself a Winchester 12 gauge Trench gun copy with a bayonet...the design worked on Huns it'll work on Zombies. :D

I love my Express 870...of course I'm more interested in "working" shotguns, rather than "purty" ones that look real nice and never get used! My first pump was an 870 Express I purchased with lawn cutting money I had saved over the Summer in 1988. I'd just turned 18 and walked into my local Canadian Tire and plunked down my brand-spankin' new F.A.C. and walked out with what I thought was the coolest shotgun ever!

I still have it and its still my favorite hunting shotgun despite the fact that today my collection is worth in the tens of thousands. As for its action, I haven't found a slicker one! Just ask my brother, I can snap off three No. 6 shells while bunny hunting so fast that it sounds like one, looong, rolling shot. After almost 18 seasons afield, "she" sure isn't "purty" but I'd have no hesitation staking my life on "her." You can't go wrong with an 870, no matter the model!

Have owned and shot both. IMHO the 870 is THE best pump ever made. Both the Wingmaster and Express perform very well. I prefer the Wingmaster because I like good Walnut and a deep blued finish. Just me.:)

Guess you've never used a Winchester Model 12 or even better a Remington Model 31 best pump ever made.

The 18" barrel is fun; perfect size but not as good for duck hunting or whatever...but the coolness factor makes up for it.

Wow, checking MSRP's, $150 was a daaang good price for my Wingmaster. Should I leave it in it's original condition, or "tacticalize" it?

I as well have the 18" 870 express. The fit, finish, and smoothness of it isn't as good as my roommates police 870. But it's very close. It's a good anti zombie gun. My roommate aslo has the same express as well and he loves it.
