So I ordered an "Ought Six"

I agree with this statement, but partially agree with the former. A 30-06 cannot do at 300yds what a 300 Winrem short belted magnum can with 180gr + bullets. Which means that they are identical in paper performance within 85% of normal hunting range. I'll still pack a 300 WM elk hunting when possible, on a long distance/epxpensive trip.

Pathfinder, you need to post pictures when you get the chance. Try to find an old Lyman alaskan, or Leupold Pioneer, maybe a marbles or lyman peep to make it all period. Enjoy!

I never meant to compare the 30-06 to the Win Mag, but the difference is more like 200 yards in the 300s favor before they are identical for velocity and impact. I'm just sick of the attitude that magnum shooters are all retarded. You seldom hear the 30-30 crowd whining that the 30-06 users just need to practice and develope their skills. I wonder why that is?

Personally when you can get a new accurate rifle for $300.00 why bother with old crap from the last world war reconditionned and worked over by a handfull of monkeys. I'm surpirsed there are still people buying these relics for that kind of money. Dark bores, "good condition", cheap maple stocks, WTF is that about anyway?

Calibre is just a choice, not the finger of god. Some CGN'rs are a little more passionate about their selection than others. I have bored numerous deer, moose, elk to death with my grandfathers sporterized Eddystone P17 in 30-06, and my grandfather was boring moose long before that....but I wouldn't turn my nose up on a 270 WSM either:evil:.

Post some targets once you get a chance. Here's what my "crappy" milsurp relic is capable of after playing with handloads.

Yep, you can buy new crap instead of old crap.....

Exactly...... I have a couple of Stevens 200's. While they shoot well, they are boring, with about as much character and style as a 95 KIA....
They have cheap fit and finish are they are a tool, and about as exciting as a hammer. Just because its cheap does not make it great.
Why do people buy old Mustangs and Camaro's and fix them up.... they have history and style and not everyone wants the same cheap rifle.....

Boy you've got a lot to learn... If that's possible .

Tell me where I can get a new 30.06 with scope bases, sling swivels and a wood stock for 300$, I will buy it on the spot.

Personally I like the old world character, Im sure the stevens 200 is accurate but one look at it and I want to lose my lunch....

That is about personal preference, the ability to discern quality and finish, it is about..............................wasting my time, aren't I!

I have a 8mm BRNO Mauser 98 in nearly mint condition and also a 7.62 x 54r Polish m38 and their merits for sure (especially the 8mm). I was just looking over the vast amount of garbage that site sells. You really have to sort through the refuse before you can find one decent gun in there.

I repeat, what's the attraction in someone's made up old "Franken" gun with dark bores, cheap wood stocks cracked at the receiver, etc. With new guns going between $300 and $550(Ruger with rings) these days, you don't have to buy someone's old, used, worn out, holey, underwear to get by anymore.

Maybe you got lucky and found a decent one in the batch? Good luck with it!

I'll trade you a new Savage for that old piece of crap Bruno. Your right though you do have to sort through the list to find the right gun. But isn't that half the fun? :)

There is no new Ruger for 550, its 600 plus tax, so 700 out the door. The wood versions are 720 plus tax, so over 800 out the door.

I was going to buy a new Hawkeye SS for 599, then I read Chuck Hawks review. Even though he is an ass, he stated the new trigger was terrible and extremely disappointing. The action was the roughtest action he has run across on a new rifle. That the fit and finish was terrible. So, because of that, I did not want to take a chance on a new Ruger.

You should have based your decisions regarding rifle selection based on your initial impression.;)

I haven't seen one at the local shops to handle. I will call again, but the new Rugers ar few and far between locally in Vancouver. I don't mind ordering online, but if I haven't been able to handle one, I am cautious.

Also, I would prefer the wood stalk version, and they don't seem to be on sale.

#### Hawks doesn't like very many guns that are under $1500 or under 40 years old.

I agree he is an ass, but I was hoping in his review at least the trigger would be good and the action smooth. He actually stated the trigger was terrible and the Mark ll trigger was better. The action was like sandpaper. He stated if you replace the trigger, stock and smooth out the action, it would be good. Thats a lot of work on a new rifle. He stated he was a Ruger fan and really was disappointed with the Hawkeye and was expecting much more from Ruger. Take it for what its worth.

I will see if I can find one locally to handle and see how close he was..... Buffing the action is no biggie, but the trigger should be good, as I don't want to spend 100 bucks on an aftermarket. I am not even sure if they make them for the Hawkeye.

I repeat let me know where to send that cheque and I will write it.......

As for the franken gun....In the event that I dont' like, I will simply resell it with full disclosure and lose little or no money.

Its not hard to sell a 30.06 Bolt gun for 250$-300$

This seems like an easier way for me to find out wether I like the "ought six" rather than paying 1000$ in hope that its for me.
