So I sat there contemplating my bowl of track soup

I was sitting in the woods last evening thinking I had missed the biggest deer I had ever shot at 1/2 hr earlier. When the biggest partridge I ever saw walked up to 10 feet from me. I was real tempted to blast it but glad I didn't as the deer I thought i missed was dying 200' from me and the shot probably would have pushed him further on.

I do understand what you are saying though, the combo gun has been discussed with my hunting partners but if it is deer season, that seems to always trump bird hunting.

Pellet gun is tempting but i carry enough stuff in the woods already!

Dewd ..... Cuz shootin' birds is just as cool as shootin' deer and a lot easier to lug out. I'd take two grouse over a deer anyday. ;)

.

SC you don't like birds over deer because it's cooler, it's because youre a crotchety old fudd and pulling dead weight out of the bush lays you up for days :D I can see it now...

"HONEEEY!!! get me the damn Tylenol 3's...sob'in knees actin' up again"

This winter I intend to create some birdshot loads for my .444 Marlin.
Probably just buy some .410 #7 and put it all into .444 brass.
Maybe an inverted gas check glued in to hold it all in.
I've scared up at least 20 prairie chickens pushing bush this year,
and the sudden FLAPFLAPFLAP startles me every time!
Then maybe next year I won't be completely skunked...

That's why the thought of hunting with a drilling or combination gun is appealing to a few nimrods. Take whatever comes along.

.

I'm one of those "nimrods" :D

Regardless of the quantity of meat, I'd much rather have a plate of grouse, partridge or rabbit than deer any day of the week. That's not to say I don't enjoy venison though.

I approach the problem slightly different, instead of a combo gun we use combo hunters. My wife uses one of her rifles for deer while I carry a O/U 28gauge for the birds and vise versa. The best of both worlds.

It was snowy

There was snow there that day and a lot of tracks just no animals on any drive we did that day. No other explanation except that it was just one deer walking around and around in circles. I tried to follow but got dizzy and stopped.

I was reading up more on the hunting guide this week and not 100% sure combination guns would be legal. Discussing it with my buddy and he says no and i say maybe. Using one shotty with two loads may be suspect but a combination may be OK. Not sure

Ya, my deer 'weren't there' either until it snowed and then the tracks were everywhere and we tracked one right into the freezer. Was there snow when you were hunting?

What regs are those that suggest it isn't legal?

In the firearms requirements of the hunting guide

There is the section in the hunting guide that sets limits on what you can use to hunt various types of game. For upland game birds the mag is limited to two rounds, can't use center fire rifles etc. For Deer can't use shot loads like 00buck and don't recommend anything under .224 caliber rounds.

That part of the hunting guide must refer to a hunting regulation. I have to look it up.

Our quotes got messed up somehow, weird.

Anyway that must be the regs for your province, I didn't notice your location tag.
