So the general consensus is the Vanguard S2 is the best of the budget rifles ?

Did I get the model correct ?

Have seen many threads but to be honest haven't really paid attention.

Some say all the companies are in a race to the bottom but seems to me they are all trying to cover a certain price point.

Not a fan of the Rem. 783. Savage Axis looks ok, Hog Hunter looks ok too. Ruger American looks alright etc. etc.

But seems like the Vanguard is the best of the bunch ?

Just want something in this price range for a truck gun but don't want garbage.

Thanks for your opinions.

As long as they don't change what there doing I will never own a Remington, savage, or anything under $1000 regardless of model. I now have three vanguards and you get so much for your money. Add a Bell and Carlson stock and your around $1000 depending on how good of a deal you get on the rifle and I can't think of a better rifle for the money. There is one downside and that is your not getting a lightweight rifle but I personally love the balance.

My opinion is based on owning many savage and Remington rifles, still have some, but what the companies are cranking out now days it's hard to argue with a sub MOA guaranteed rifle with a great two stage factory trigger, very acceptable finish for the price point and then all the features the action offers I will not be sending my money to the other guys.

Too bad you missed out on the blaze model clear out at 499 it would of made a heck of a truck gun.

The stock on the Savage Axis isn't the best, but the rifle is darn good for $400. Depends on what you expect for your extra $300 in the Vanguard, because you do get a ton of value out of it. If you're budget conscious, go with the Axis. It's a great shooting hunting rifle, but this isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison.

Is that the one with the car flame stock paint job (I think it was posted by Why Not ? ... could be wrong on that) with the crazy good groupings?

The consensus is that the Vanguard(s) are the best bang for the buck. Personally have never owned one.

I did own a Axis. Worst POS cheap azz rifle i have ever handled. Many buy them then spend the $300 difference on a better stock and trigger. Why not just buy the better rifle in the first place?? I have handled the 700 sps and 783, and those dont compare to a 10-15 year old BDL.

There are a lot of great choices for the Vanguard money in used, but if i was going for a new budget rifle, it would be a Howa 1500/Vanguard.

I'll stick with a Rem700 SPS as my bottom end rifle.

I'm a remington 700/600 fan and have the higher end covered. Problem with the SPS is I'd be too tempted to turn it into what I know Remington's can be and before you know it, it would be an expensive build. Then I would be telling myself I should have just bought The Remington Mountain model and left it alone.

And this is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Have no interest in swapping out part after part. Should just get a better rifle in the first place.

Just looking for the best of the budget's and call it a day.

Is it my understanding the Howa 1500 and Vanguard are the same rifle ?

I prefer the Howa 1500...same rifle with more options as far as caliber, stocks, barrel lengths, finishes. My Howa 6.5x55 with Hogue stock is lighter then my .243 Blaze Vanguard and points better too.

Ok, so the action, barrel (besides length and caliber) and trigger are the same on the Howa 1500 and the Vangaurd S2 ? Just a matter of the option differences you listed ?

This info is a big help. Was not aware of this. Thank you.
