Hello,

So, dating a girl for a year or so and got her into shooting and small game hunting. She loves it.. Turns out that her dad was quite the shooter back in the day and still has a few things in a box downstairs. We opened it for the first time in a decade or so.
I know a little about each gun, but what can you tell me about these two?

The first has been in the family since a doctor patched up a cowboy with a bullet hole and got it in trade. Pretty sure it's a Remington 1858 / new army.

Second is another beauty but in .455. I think it's a S&W Hand Ejector Second Model.

Very nice find. The Remington looks to have lots of color left, and a clear stamp on the grip. Was the S&W gun registered? It can still be done if not. Also in very nice condition.

If the girl is half as pretty as those revolvers i'd be keepin em all! I'm very jealous of the remington, i'm a big fan of them and have a pair of reproductions. And the smith is sweet as well, but it's a smith, so that's to be expected. 8)

I would suggest that you try and identify the inspector's initials on the grip.
(Take good clear photos of the grip panel.)
With the serial number these people can probably tell you when it was manufactured.

They helped me with dating my Remington.

Serial number;

I heard back from the fellow on the Remington Society Forum regarding the dating of my New Model Army revolver.

His comments;

During October 1864, E. Remington & Sons shipped 4000 NMA revolvers to the U.S. Government against their contract of November 21, 1863. The serial number of your revolver, 107274, falls in the range of this production lot.
