So what have you modded on your SKS?

Over the years I have had an AK-84s in .223, a few ARs, a CAR15, SKSs, M305s, M1 carbines, and always end up getting another SKS.

A few years ago I bought 200.00 Russian SKS, which has always been a good fun shooter, that I do not worry about using in the bush.

Being an AR15 guy, I have always preferred the sliding stocks of ARs for LOP for different shooters, and for winter shooting preferred poly stocks.

Enjoy tinkering with my SKS, doing for the most part simple mods, with the option of always going back to the laminate stock and bayonet if I chose.

Looked at different stocks but liked the Tapco OD stock the best, and yes I know people love calling them Crapco, but I really do not care, I just know what works for me.

Never liked the bayonet, but did not want to grind off the lug either, but as me and the kids shoot usually off my table, or on the ground, I opted for a used 20.00 bipod.

Prefer magazines, so modded the bolt so mags can be inserted with the bolt open or closed. Also installed a SBI push forward mag release as I liked my old 84s (log gone now) AK style release.

Did not like the Tapco handguard, so swapped it out for an aluminum picatinny handguard, added a rear cover picatinny too.

Moved the cocking handle to the left, now I can keep my right hand on the pistol grip when doing mag changes. The new handguard, and rear cover, are indexed to the receiver with allen bolts, and are rock solid. Keep a mini screw driver and allen wrench in the Tapco pistol grip storage cavity for field stripping.

All in all, I really like these mods, way nicer to shoot. Ammo is cheap, kids like shooting it, and it just keeps going bang. :)

And yeah I know the purists and guys with semis costing 2,3, or 4 times more (I am one) will say it is a waste of money, but you know what? I have way less into this 200.00 rifle with used parts and stuff I found on sale, than I have into my other semis.

I am not afraid to have the rifle fall on the ground, get rained on, fall in the mud, it is just a fun truck gun, so please refrain from bashing me on my beater rifle fun project.

Would like to hear from other SKS owners and their mods.

I really like the Type 81, but I just know by the time I finished upgrades I would spend 1200.00 to 1500.00 into it, as compared to 540.00 my Crapco SKS.

Just wish I could still use my AR in the bush. :(

Since I have been modding my SKS and letting my buddys try it, I now have 3 more buddies who now have bought and modded SKSs too.

Anyways would love to see other SKSs and your ideas, thanks.

Very cool mods!...I put a wartak rail on mine with a quck pin so that I can run a red dot...I am just deciding whether I should do the bolt mod so that I can drop the mags with the bolt closed..... I still have the wood stock on mine and everytime I think about going pistol grip (which I would prefer) I look in the back seat of my truck and see my sks bouncing around and I think it might be a waste of money! Did you notice much of a weight difference when you put the tapco on?
Anyway thanks for sharing
Jason

Thanks, with just the new stock not that much difference in the weight. Both with everything with everything else yes it is heavier. But all the parts are pretty beefy so I don't mind. I am still looking for a QD cowitness red dot, but the irons are fine as we don't really shot much part 100 yards

I have a tapco stock on one of my sks. It doesn't make the gun feel any lighter in my opinion, but it does make the rifle feel top heavy. It's a heavy milled reciever and now you're hand is on the pistol grip which places it lower. The adjustable LOP is handy though and the pistol grip makes it so much easier to hold the rifle pointing forward without your support arm.

I have one I just refinished the wood stock, the other is tapco'd. Although now I regret putting the taco stock on the other, the wood stock seems to work better for me

My old sks had a tapco stock and the magazine well removed. I also removed the bayonet. I then had the reciever tapped for a choate scope mount. After wasting all that money and time on it I sold it. I then went and purchased another one and left it in original form.

Mine is a work in progress barrel cut to 18.6 threaded with bird cage flash hider. Also stock cut for VZ folder, fab defense grip and mag well milled out for T81 mags with BHO still functional for strippers, home made ak/sks d style mag release. Front sight is off of T97 and tig welded on to the gas block. Just at 7lbs no mag and 7.5lbs with loaded 5rnd mag.

I use Image Shack for all my pictures, costs just a few bucks a month to have my pics backed up and linked to Gunnutz for threads. :)

I'm normally an SKS purist, after tapco'ing one years ago and realizing what a waste of money, time and effort that was. However, I got a good deal on a mismatched Russian in an Archangel stock... so I figured what the hell, and added the optic rail and mag conversion. It actually runs really well.
