So, what makes the R 25 "restricted"?

If the club/range rules don't prohibit using live critters as targets and you can entice the critters to enter the target area and the relevant hunting regulations in your province don't forbid it for whatever reason at that time and place, in theory, you could hunt with your R25. But it's not what many people call hunting. Hope you can get away to the U.S. soon to enjoy yours more fully.

Right, I wouldn't want to set up at a regular shooting bench and wait for a deer to walk in front of the target backstop either. Although as you point out it would be fine (since our club does allow hunting on its property by members). I wouldn't consider that hunting either. I would like to get to the US to use it, but I would much rather have our laws changed to allow me to enjoy my own property in my own country.

I am new to shooting and was shocked to find out I could not fire any restriced firearms on a farm or back fields only at a gun club or approved range. Seems crazy to me. I am in for sending letters to the officials listed.
Any official document about the requirements for a range? eg Berm thickness or min height etc...
Thanks for all the insight

Not "at a gun club." Only on an approved range. Whether the range is run by a gun club or on property owned by a gun club is irrelevant. You are only allowed to fire your restricted on an approved range. Off the approved range, still on gun club property is just as illegal as a local park or shopping mall.

correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe it was the conservatives under Bullruney that wrote c-68, after the marc lapine affair up in montreal. The fiberals under Jean the liar had the power to stop the bill, but impleminted it anyway. Had to seem like they were doing something to put the breaks on all us assassin wannabees.

If you want to know the actual correct history of gun control in Canada, there are plenty of threads on it in other areas of CGN.
