What's your favorite "plinking" caliber?

Having been into handguns for twenty odd years, my favorite calibers to shoot still are the .22LR and the 9mm. Why, you may ask? Well for two reasons, primarily: 1) .22LR is cheap and can be bought practically anywhere, and; 2) 9mm is also relatively cheap and plentiful, and allows for a choice of three different grains when wanting to shoot centre-fire. So, for all those plinkers out there, what's your stand on an ol' standby?

Strictly for plinking, it's damn hard to beat the 22LR.

That being said, I'm not sure if you can add to your poll, but 38 Special is also an excellent plinking round with light loads behind a lead slug...
 
.22LR is the plinking round in my book. Last weekend I went through a box of 525 rounds of Federal stuff ($15.99 I think) in less than 3 hours, and that was in addition to 250 rounds of 9mm ($59.99) and maybe 30 rounds of .223.

I like to do a lot of rapid-fire drills with .22LR pistols (like, 20 rounds is less than 10 seconds kind of thing, most of which is changing the mag) and it would cost way too much to carry on like that with any other calibre.

I find that .22LR is great for trying different things and not feeling bad about wasting ammo doing it, and that is really the definition of plinking isn't it?

Every time I am at the range I make sure I have at least one .22LR pistol with me. .22LR gets my vote all the way!
 
If "Plinking" is just shooting for the fun if it, then that's pretty much all I do outside of preparing and shooting during hunting season, four Milshoots, and a few Silhouette matches each year.

My favourite gun to shoot is the 44 Mag - it always brings a smile to me and those around me. I cast and reload, so it's not that expensive to shoot.
 
My Vote: Twenty-Two...

Whatever I take to the range I always end up taking something in .22 lr to plink with, too...

.22lr is the plinking round - agreed.

Favourite plinking round though is the .40S&W :D
Why? It feels serious when shooting 180gr ammunition which satisfies my desire to shoot .45acp but is only a little more in cost than the 9x19 ammunition :)

If money was no object and I had piles of ammunition at my disposal for plinking then it'd obviously be a DE in .50AE ;)
 
9MM because I reload it for next to nothing, and its the only caliber or handgun that I own. I was looking at the Ruger 22/45 the other day and I liked it, so maybe a .22 is on the books, but thats $400 that I could put towards a .45 a-la USP Tac, XD45 or 1911. Oh well, I'll have to buy em all!
 
Yeah, if I understand 'plinking' to mean lots of cheap, low-calibre shooting then the .22 doesn't have much competition. Can a person 'plink' with a .357 Mag?

I have the same problem, it's like one of my dogs, and tries to jump into my range bag for a car ride every time she sees me putting my boots, and jacket on. :D

Worse yet I have both 7.62x25TT, and a 9mm barrel for it. :)
 
By volume, 22. But that doesn't make it my favourite. I enjoy cracking off a box of 44's far more than I enjoy shooting off a brick of 22's
