Society of Misguided Adventurers

Seems that those that would consider likely members "Elitists" still don't get it. They are much more likely to consider themselves as driven enthusiasts that did whatever it took.

I agree wholeheartedly DL, but then it is exactly that type of driven enthusiasm that leads to the "elitist mentality", wouldn't you say? Or possibly more accurately to the "elitist perception"............

It's hard for people to relate to things that they can't do. Often they are quick to include the reasons why they won't, or can't, or didn't, but that just means that they can't relate to those that will and can and did. Sometimes they resent them, sometimes not.

The "Elitists" aren't excluding anyone, they are more likely to be encouraging others to give it a go. The others do a good enough job of excluding themselves.

Whatever, I've gotta go shooting while its still windy.

I think angus has a "take all comers" attitude and I dont consider this group elitist at all.... while I have a handful of kills across a handful of countries but I pale in comparison to what some of the top members have done.... to me, I see an opportunity for some great stories, a potential for motivation and maybe an opportunity to share my own adventures and us3 my creative writing skills...

There are many members on this board I could learn from in regards to hunting many species... I would love to hear some stories from hoytcannon, bearkiller, boomer etc.... one of my favorite aspects of hunting is the stories told around the woodstove at camp and the dreams of what might happen tomorrow....

 Que? Practicing dealing with drift?

Yep; shot pretty ordinary hunting rifles out to 650 to play with the wind. At the same time I was helping a friend get ready for his sheep hunt. If I were a Yukon sheep I'd find a hole to hide in.;) After all these years its still hard to beat an STW.

A fun day, and I still have time to hit the club range and rip off a couple boxes of .458s.

Haha there you are with the .458 and forty rounds. Well you know what, when you head overseas again and run the .458 against the .375, it would be quite something to make a science of it and pace off distances the respective animals travelled following the hit. You're one of the few who shoots true big game in enough volume a genuine result may be produced. I was trying to think of how best to judge it, as time would be tough given big animals often move out of view after being hit. Even paces would be tough as discerning exactly where it was standing when hit can be a challenge, but it's a start. Would be neat to get averages, like ".458 30 paces, .375 42 paces average." But I'm dreaming, the realities of the bush and shots make it hard. Just the same, if anyone can shoot enough to work out a trend, it's likely you.

And indeed, and thanks Brad, it seems the elitism attitude almost always starts from the side that takes exception unfortunately, and those considered elitists are usually extremely welcoming and encouraging. At least that's how I hope to see it.

Still need to work on the points table.

I personally see an opportunity to tell my stories of whitetail, mulie, elk, turkey , timberwolf and alligator and hear some stories that will make me long for more... a good hunting story is a good hunting story and it doesnť matter where it takes place or what you chase... I want to hear them all.... any pat mcmanus fans out there!

I've got a thought about the categories. Since flying is a stand alone achievement why not have separate wings to add to whatever level of crest the individual is at. Say a triangle with wings, or a separate add-on for choppers.

Ain't that the truth! Never tried McManus, perhaps I'll have to I've heard he can pen a chuckle.

I have a paperback that includes a whack of his short stories written for outdoor life.... if you want to PM your addy I will fire it off to you... then you can pass it on to anyone else who is interested in a good laugh.....

SB........I have read pretty much everything he has written, one of the few authors that can actually make me laugh out loud. I can personally relate to a lot of his exploits as a child, the bike where the chain comes off at the most inopportune times, kid camping, how to get unlost...........He is a truly gifted humor author.

As a complete hijack, I pulled my well worn copy of "All About Bears" by Don DeHart off the shelf the other day and started re-reading it for the gigahillionth time. I got the book when I was about 8 or 9 and it's a great little read. DeHart was a guide in Alaska in the 30's-60's and he has some fun hunting stories about guiding guys for grizzlies and brownies. There are also chapters about black and polar bear hunting. It's interesting to read about the rifles, cartridges and bullets used in those days. Not sure if it's even still available but it's worth seeking out. It's on Amazon...pricey, but no hill for a high-stepper.

Nice...so I assume literacy is a prerequisite for admission?

Have any of you read "Along the Hunter's Path" by Kai-Uwe Denker? I've been looking for it for some time but I suspect I'll just have to order it online.

You've out-literacy'd me on that one, but yes well read is a massive asset! A book exchange should be part of it come to think of it, between us all we have quite a library of rare works. I even have an original 19th century Royal Geographic Society gazette on the ongoing exploration of Africa's interior and maps to that point. For an equally delicate loan I'd be happy to send some neat stuff out.

Hey you guys aren't doing very well at keeping SoMA current.................WTF..........

And by the way I just heard today that I got my Sask WT draw..............I'm going deer hunting in Nov...:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana: Hey do you guys think a 223 is big enough for a Sask whitetail ? OR Hey do you guys think a 300 Wby is overkill for Sask whitetail ? Decisions, decisions decisions............what rifle and caliber do I take............anything but a 270.......:p:p:p......... I know, I have a new to me 700 Classic, 7mm Wby, should be just the ticket. Wait, I haven't killed anything with my 7 RUM either, or my 7-08, or my 6.5X55, or my 7X64, or............well you get the picture...........

Funny this got bumped..... was about to do it myself......

Angus.... the book has been sent..... for the record, before you read it, kid camping is excellent and rings true.... but imop, rancid crabtree and the demon bat has to rank among if not on the top of my faves....

Good luck putting it down.... I have since bought the whole library of his works....

To really fit in you should bring an STW, but the RUM would be OK if you sign a waiver stating that you've been advised about the STW.

Does he have to learn how to speak with a Texan drawl in order to use either of those chamberings?
