Socks

I wear a lightweight merino wool sock next to my skin, and depending on temperature, medium or heavy weight wool socks on top. My feet stay warm even after sitting for hours in mid-November.

I wear wool hiking socks from Costco in my hunting boots for the most part. Since my hunting boots (Altberg Defenders) are also my everyday, most everything else footgear thats a lot of time in Costco socks. They are plenty good enough, and last reasonably well esp considering that they don't cost much. Cheap in fact.

I have a love/hate thing going with Smart Wool socks. They are expensive and have a service life best measured with the second hand on your watch; but you can leap tall buildings while they last.

Dogleg, get out of my head!

Those Costco Merino blend socks are amazing value. SmartWool and similar are better quality and feel nicer, but they are quite a bit more expensive.

I used to use polypro liner socks under a thicker sock for high mileage days, but since I started using quality merino blend socks I find I don't have to anymore.

Having a properly breathable boot really, really helps. Waterproof breathable boots are not very breathable at all compared to an unlined boot. I generally only wear them when conditions are "full wet".

Thanks guys for the discussion here, ive ordered some "liner" things.... anthen plan on using a wool? sock of mid thickness to do some serious Ks in.

will go from there!
thanks

Smartwool for the most part while hunting. I really like the fit. I default to a mid-weight sock but also carry something a bit heavier to change out of, they are nice for sleeping too on cold nights.

I've also got some odds and ends from other brands. Cabela's here often has some cozy Browning socks for sale, thick and warm! Helly Hansen also has some nice cold weather gear.

Boots are either Timberland Flumes or Kamik Nations depending on the temperature. Or Merrell slip-ons if the ground is dry and it's warm outside.

I’ve found I can’t wear Merino wool for too many days in a row, start to itch

Have you tried washing them?

But seriously, not all merino socks are created equal. There's got to be a variety in the quality of the merino wool itself, and most fabrics are blends with synthetic fibres.

I have perpetually cold feet. Best set up for me are;

Cabela's deluxe cold winter socks or the Redhead version from BPS.

Light merino wool liner.

On cold days Arctic Shield boot covers.

I tried the bigger name brands and still found the cabela's one the best.

$24.99 a pair but go on sale regularly for half price.

The Arctic Shield boot covers are a huge game changer.

I've been using darn tough socks the last 5 or so years. They last pretty good but do have a lifetime warranty. I used it last year and they sent me 6 new pairs. I won't do it again since I feel that's asking too much of a company but I will certainly buy more when these wear out. FWIW warranty claim was easy. Send the old socks in, get new ones back a few weeks later.

Either Darn Tough or Icebreaker merino wool socks, have thin & med thicknesses. If I’m working/hunting in actual winter conditions I’ll add a second layer of a thicker merino overtop of the thin ones. Have some old Thorlo ski socks I wear as well that are not merino but are really thick and warm.

Take advantage of the warranty, the way I look at it they will use the worn out returns to evaluate and improve their design. Everyone wins.

I used Mariano wool on bear shin then I put one real heavy woollen socks over them. They work wonders when hunting in a bush blind or out in the middle of the river/bay ice fishing.
A little trick I also used was to put a pair of felt insoles under the felt liner in each boot. Made hours on the ice much more enjoyable.
