SOCOM Abandons plans for a 45ACP!

I subscribe to Jane's Defense Weekly, and the latest issue states that
SOCOM has shelved plans to change their service pistol from the M9 to some
type of 45ACP unit.
The Coast Guard has recently signed a deal for a load of Sig 226/229 in 40S&W
but the much anticipated return to a 45ACP for the majority of the American
Armed Forces isn't going to happen...at least at this point in time.
No elaboration on whether this was based on budget or trials evaluations...
My guess is the US military doesn't have the 'chump change' available, what
with all of the other drains on their budget currently, and for the forseeable
future!
 
old news, see the thread about them trying to start a new, doomed, .45 project.
 
So the 9mm is going to remain then for the long haul?

Hmmmm Browning Hi-Power or Beretta 92-Series :)
Which would you choose??

I'm thinking HP, but I've kinda liked the look of the Beretta's
 
Glock was designing a .45ACP pistol for the competition, it will be revealed at the Shot Show in Orlando.

The long list of things Glock is designing that will be revealed at the shot show includes a lot of stuff that never existed. The carbine, the single stack full size. You name it.
 
Just think of the money that went into the HK 45 project with Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn$$$
Now if HK was smart (?), they would not waste the work that went into that pistol and start selling it in all calibres.
 
The Hk45 is going to come out in other calibre's -- but the recent versions have totally ignored Larry and Ken...

USSOC is in budgetary crisis - so a new comitte built handgun was deemed nonsense.

Units that want (and can) buy COTS guns.

Delta/CAG use 1911's (Nighthawk is going to be making a civilan version of the LAV/Nighthawk unit gun) and Glock19's
MARSOC and MEUSOC use 1911's (MARSOC - Kimbers, MEUSOC unit built guns)
NAVSOF - SIG P226
NAV SOF DEVGRP - 1911's and Sig's

The only USSOC units using the M9 are the SF Groups and the Ranger Bn's
(TF deployed Rangers can get 1911's off their host CAG unit)

Cool, I think I will have to budget for one, although they are said to take USP mags, which is a good thing as I have lots. Ergonomics and the slide appear different/ more user friendly, as does the mag well (looks a little more flared than a regular USP). I read is sits a slight bit lower in the hand as well.

The bonus is that you can the grip inserts for accomodate hand size/ comfort..

Except that this info comes from Glock. (single stack full size ... you say?)

Well, the HK45 is essentially a USP with a slightly longer barrel, slightly slimmer grip, slightly lower mag capacity, and a different rail. I don't think it was a tremendously huge investment.
 
Hell I an sure Norinco could equip most of the US army with 1911’s for as much as they spent writing up the contract requirements for this! I figure it would cost 2.5 million US to buy 100,000 pistols
 
As most of us gun owners know, the USSOCOM already employs a 1911 .45 in the Kimber Warrior for the USMC DET. 1 unit, and I am certain that any of the operators in this Command can shoose what ever sidearm they want. This abandonment could also be part of the new guidelines to replace the M9 for the entire military as they have opted to go back to a 45.

On the issue of the Berretta vs. Hi-Power, no contest, Hi-Power all the way!

My opinion also.

The steel frame will still be working when the "alloy" frame is cracked and condemned.

I have not seen any other 9 that would make me get rid of my BHP Mk3s
(unless I could trade one off for an Artillery Luger with all the trimmings:D )

and the english, and a few others yet, its as viable a service pistol as the 1911 if not more so......I'd definitly take it over a beretta, that thing feels like a club and dosen't fit unless your hand is big, and most aren't
 
There isn't that much difference in grip size between 92FS and BHP; in fact Vertec and Elite 1 are even smaller. I've handled Berettas with (after-market ?) wooden grips that did make the gun feel too big, but with normal/ thin rubber grips the gun should fit a grown man/woman just fine; I don't have large hands and 92FS fits me great... I've handled a HP with those plastic wrap around grips and it was larger than any Beretta I've ever tried....

I never liked BHP, IMO it's an outdated* combat gun. I'd take any quality DA auto over it.

*Everyone and their grandma makes a 1911; which had evolved/ improved over the years, but BHP is the same as it was in ~80 yers ago
