Socom Resurrection

Are the SOCOM's an M1 variant exempt from the mag size rules?

Nope. Same stupid rules apply.

This may sound stupid, but I have *no* experience with anything not bolt: I'm assuming that those are Restricted and you need to be part of a gun club?

Only because the socom's have a barrel length shorter than 16".
Regular M-14's and the chopped ones (to 18.5") arte non restricted. Lots of guys even hunt wiht them.

Nice stick - what"s it weigh???

I cannot give you the exact weight on each of them, I can only tell you that they are all heavy. But shooting just from a bench doesn't really pose a problem to me.

The heaviest of all are these two due to the things attach to them.

So sometimes it has to be just this one:

I kind of wish there was a SOCOM version that met the minimum length requirements to be non-restricted. Or rather, that the rules would be changed so that the SOCOM's not restricted. Those boomstix above are way too cool to be stuck going to the range and coming home, going to the range and coming home, going to the range and coming home...

I guess it doesn't matter: their legal status won't mean a whit when the zombies attack ;)

I dont really get it.... can you not make your regular non restricted M14 to look just like the SOCOM version except it has a longer barrel and thus still none restricted ??

Best Balanced from the Collection

Which one, in your opinion, is the best balanced, maneuverable, manageable from a take-down POV and features the least weight? (ed. of the M14s posted).

To answer your question, that would be the Black Troy Socom with the US Optics scope.

EC,
VERRRrrrrrrrry NICE collection of modded up 14s.

I see you like the shorties ...
they certainly balance better for me in most stocks,
and with a street legal 18 3/4" barrel chop,
are my personal preference for an all around 14.

With all your experience with modded up M14s,
your perspective and opinions on M14 stock design would be greatly appreciated.
Which M14 stock is your "favorite" and why?

I am still searching for the "perfect" M14 stock, and it will arrive some day ....
even if I have to make it myself. So far, my personal favorite M14 stock setup is still my Do it Yourself side folder with a US GI glas stock as the starting point.
Picture005.jpg

This setup is light, fast, and balances well for me with or without optics.

I sold my JAE gen 1 stock.
Much as I liked the adjustable ergonomic fit,
and the bolt up/repeatable tension trigger guard replacement,
and the idea of a big aluminum bedding block,
I simply found the JAE too big, and too heavy for general use.
Maybe if I was a competitive M14 target shooter,
then the JAE would be my first choice.

I bought an AKM stock,
and dropped it into the chop saw,
to create a very nice handling AKM Chop Mod.
AR14001.jpg

I liked the AKM for the balance and workmanship,
and I loved the AKM rectangular op rod guide, and the way it free floats the barrel.
But hated the AKM handguard attachment design [ mounting the handguard to the stock inbstead of to the removeable action makes it a major pain to strip ], and the rail is TWO piece.

I sold my AKM chop mod, and am now assisting in the design of another Munimula stock, which hopefully will have all the best features of the competition, and none of their weak points.

So if you have some advice regarding good and bad features of your stock designs, based on your experience,
I would be glad to hear it.
thanks

My Favourite and Why

Which M14 stock is your "favorite" and why?

Laz,

The question you pose to me is hard to answer, simply because the stocks that I have all have served a purpose of some sort. The best stock I can say is a stock that would bed the action, offer a sturdy scope base, lessen the "feel" of the heavy rifle, make it feel balance all around is what I am trying to say here. Lastly, is quality of the stock. I am a person who doesn't mind paying for quality. In the long run, there is no regret. Whether that be in Aluminum or Fiberglass, how it was made matters most.

I am trying to see if I can avail of a Vltor stock and for the handguard, I would like to use the Ultimak rail. I agree with you on the 18.5 barreled M1A's, they seem to balance well and shoot well. Also, they are legal to go hunting. The SOCOM's look cool but they are restricted.

Hope this helps, I am really not an expert, more of a student, trying to learn and harness the benefits from different stocks or different platforms. All of the stocks are second hand, except for the Black Troy MCS, that was brand new, bought a long time ago.(4 Years ago, estimate).

Good Luck on your project Laz.:)

EC, you have an outstanding collection.

I've sent a few rounds down range with a SOCOM in a TROY M14 MCS and I was impressed with it's performance.

I don't own a SOCOM, but I do have a pair of MK14s.

This Mod 1 is light and swing-able...

This sub MOA Mod 0 is a bit heavier...

My favorite M14 stocks are the SAGE Mod 1 (M14ALCS/CV) and the USGI
synthetic stock with the Rigid Rail Modification (RRM) pictured below.

Hey echo charlie,

Nice work on those rifles, man. So do you use 'em or just make 'em? :)

The answer is both. First is the concept on how I like the rifle to come out and what is it going to be used at, say mid range or something close. Then I scout around what is available. And then do lots of OT at work to fund the project.:D Then, when everything is ready, parts and rifle, I work on it till I have my end result.
