SOF skin on frame canoe for hunting

How much wilderness canoeing experience do you actually have?

Besides 3 trips back and forth a cross Hacate straite to Alska and messing around home in dugout canoes ,40 years ,trapping ,hunting and fishing ad comershal fishing plenty of sea time
I have surf on canoes as well as running rapids

Id buy new stuff too, still doesn't mean it doesn't work. Get the theme here, Milling his own logs, building his own boat, you know doing something with your own hands instead of just buying a regular boat the same as anyone else. I also see it as kinda the same reason lots of people bow hunt, use traditional muzzle loaders, spear fish/ hunt, use dog sleds etc etc. My grand father used to build great big wooden boats, heavy as hell and defiantly like not as nice as a new Lund or what have you but it he built it and fished the hell out of em and that's what it was all about for him. People are into doing things the old ways and honestly thank #### the world isn't full of people soo willing too toss away traditional methods of doing things. Like I said too, forgo the dvd kit and build his own. I agree that particular one seems a bit dainty picturing it full of meat and gear. How is an umiak less than "seaworthy"? Have you ever seen one?

Your right I will not use the plans that came in the kit that canoe is ment for one man day trip but is a good place to start

I think a small boat would be handy wear talking about coastal tide water a place prone to coastal flooding at high tide
I have bin looking at basket boats as well thay will carry me and a elk out I one go
Small and light and I will ride the tide in and out of the elk bedding spot so padling will be light around boat might be handy in this spot

I like fiberglass canoes but it will not work I have to go lighter it has to be mumble
I Ned to be able to throw it over logjams I know a glass canoe will not last long before thers a hole in it SOF is easly fixed in the bush glass is not
Funny how many guys on CGN think that throwing money at a problem fix every thing I must be getting old I still think hrad work and doing it your salf is more important

This is not the tipe of hunt most of you are uses to me either for that matter wear dealing with heavy tidal flooding
I know guys that carry hammock tent so wen it floods thy can pich there hammock tent to get out of the water
I wish a glass canoe or skif would work but there is no way in hell throwing money at the problem will work

I wouldn't take that cloth covered boat anywhere I could not walk home from.

I will happily drag my crappy Coleman canoe across any number of beaver dams and obstacles in a waterway, and not have to worry about even removing most of my gear from it. Same with fiberglass.

Nothing wrong with building something because you can, I just figure that for it's stated use, that collection of sticks and cloth is a long hike waiting to happen.

I have a couple good books on the Aleut boats, and building one was just the very start of the long days of repetitive maintenance that went in to keeping one afloat. The general ghist is that they built them with what they had, not because they were a superior technology. The shapes and some of the features of the various skin boats are well worth emulating, even if the materials may not be.

The first floating stump with a bunch of roots sticking out of it, or sharp edges rock beneath the surface, is going to be a get out and walk experience. Wear wool! :)

Cheers
