Soliciting opinions on a new firearm

Well ....apparently I need 2 rifles....cause 6.5 ain't enough for Elk....a minimum of a .30 cal rifle is needed ...I suggested that 30-30 would be the rifle....as it is .30 cal.....but then I realized I already owned an sks....which is .30 cal....so figured it would make a perfect back up gun

6800 plus posts....... you are just trolling at this point......

because cgn..... That's why......

Here is my take.......

The sks isn't a hunting rifle, never was, never will be.....

The 30-30 is range limited when talking whitetail..... How someone would think of it as a potential elk rifle is beyond me......

If you want a "do all" rifle in southern ontario, get a friggen' 270...... I prefer tailored rifles but i can't logically argue that a .270 won't do the job from coyote to elk as that would be nonsense.....

A 6.5 swede used within its limits on elk would make the 30-30 look like hillary clinton on election day....... Give your head a shake....

"moral opposition" against the .270 is reserved for people that don't think a "cheap 30-30" is an elk rifle.... Or are willing to buy tailored rifles for their choice of game..... Op, get over yourself...you totally jumped the shark on that assessment........

doh!!!

Wait.....I still have the .300 blackout to get into

Congrats on being proud of yourself and douching up your own thread........ talent level 0.......... troll level 5...... you completely lost it with the 30-30 elk.........

Not sure what you wished to accomplish here......... it what an epic fail....

Wow....thanks for your acclimation....it means more than you will ever know!
I will sleep well tonight knowing that you appreciate my accomplishment....with the epic fail....

Also....260 and 6.5x55 are virtually identical....one is long action, the other short...

Not so identical as it may appear. The 260 has 53 grain case capacity. The Swede has 57 grains. The case capacity on the 260 will be reduced as the bullet has to be shoved way back in the case to let the cartridge fit the magazine and action. The Swede can seat the bullet out much longer and make room for more powder.

I would not get worked up on a rifle for one single hunt in BC or Alberta for moose or elk you can pick up a cheep used 30-06 and get rid of it wen your dun
Sum rifle is like a Vegas marriage use it for the trip and get rid of it wen you go home

A .260 is a great choice for your parameters, so is a 6.5-284. You can easily tailor a bullet to your task at hand. A 120-140gr TTSX from a .260 is going to kill the heck out of an elk and anything else. There are lots of great bullets out there up to the task.

Hey, what works works. For nearly 12 years it's all I had above a 20 gauge, an it killed elk just as dead as my fathers '06. I agree with a 270 or 6.5x55 being a better choice though, the added range could negate alot of disappointment.

So many elk have been dropped with a 30-30 that to state it's unsuitable is absurd. No, you won't be making 350 yard shots with it, but - just like any other cartridge- used within it's parameters it will put the elk down. But it sounds like you already know that, from personal experience. :)

Well, looks like I am getting 2 rifles....I am morally opposed to 270 as a caliber.
I'll get a cheap 30-30 for the Elk, and use the .260 for everything else!

The only part that makes sense is "getting 2 rifles". The rest of this post is bad logic, or no logic at all.

There has been lots of good advice here offering several choices for you to solve your problem. You seem determined to have a problem more than you seem to want a solution.
