Solution to fake Norc NZ Flash Suppressor

Over here in New Zealand, the Norc rifles come with a "fake" muzzle break/flash suppressor. The grooves are filled in (NZ law states that longitudinal grooves are illegal because they are a "flash suppressor" but everthing else goes because it is a "muzzle break"). So I've got a tube of metal hanging off the end of the barrel that does absolutely nothing but add length. I'm not worried about having a muzzle break, so I'm thinking of cutting the tube off (maybe a quarter inch max off the muzzle). Being barely mechanical, I'm assuming that a hacksaw or putting a cutting disc on my grinder would work? Any help appreciated.

Yes, it will work. I don't know how pretty it will look after. Be careful not to touch the barrel crown, and try to keep the cut as square as possible. And I'd pull the barrel through a few times after to remove all the metal filings before you fire it.

That option looks like too much hard work- plus I want to keep the front sight....I'm leaning towards the ol' grinder technique, but I might also see if I can cut/file it to resemble a modified AK slant muzzle break?

I'd still bash it off first...it'll be easier for you to modify the stock FH when it's off the gun. Not hard to do, once you've seen a video of it being done.

Why not drill rows of holes in the grooves, and turn it into a brake. Might be necessary to install a little ring in the muzzle end to maximize gas deflection.
If it doesn't work to your satisfaction, you can always cut it off.

A-Ha! I like the hole idea, not sure what you mean by installing a little ring and how that would effect gas deflection? After drilling the holes I assume that I would need to somehow remove any burrs from the inside?

hey man.. as a fellow Kiwi im plagued by the same issues.. i drill 6 evenly spaced holes into the top 3 flutes on the Faux Hider ... helps recoil a little, but because it doesnt have a captive end, it doesnt help a lot.

and what he means by the ring on the end, if you look at most brakes, they have a very small hole, just big enough for the bullet to pass through, much like suppressors.. what this does is trap as much of the forward gasses as possible, and helps to redirect more of the gasses out of the ports on your newly converted muzzle brake, helping with recoil reduction

flick me a PM and i can try and explain a bit better

so let me get this straight, you guy's can own a real sound suppressor, but you can't have a flash suppressor? or has the sound suppressor ownership option been lost now?

They can own flash suppressors but it puts the rifle into a different class I believe.

It is all about definition! the law in NZ prohibits FLASH SUPPRESSORS due to their military application (???). You can have a flash suppressor with a higher grade firearms license but that requires having a special style of gun safe/paying more money/etc etc. The police define suppressors as having longitudinal openings (like the norc suppressor). However anyone can have a kick-ass muzzle break (as long as the holes are not longitudinal) because, as we all know, no one in the military uses muzzle breaks- they only use flash suppressors. As you can see the law makes perfect sense and I'm sure you would agree that a flash suppressor is not a muzzle break and vice versa. If you don't think too hard about this law, then you won't start screaming.

You need this adapter :

I just installed one of the Smith Enterprises M14 Muzzle Brake Adapters from Armtac.com one of our Board sponsors....

Here it is....

Some of you M14 Norc newbies might have a bit of a challenge getting that High School shop class finished flash suppressor off. YouTube is your friend. We posted videos on how to use a BFH (big hammer) on your flash suppressor.

Anyways, I just posted this review up in the FAQ / Sticky(ies) for you guys to drool over and dream of attaching the myriad of muzzle brakes with a 5/8" x 24 tpi thread pattern. :D

Hope this helps...

Barney

Smith Ent. do not ship to Nz (even though we are part of the Coalition in the 'Stan)! I will just cut off the fake brake so it is easier to carry I the bush. I value my hearing so a brake/suppressor is not part of my budget Norc upgrades!

The burrs could be cleaned out from the muzzle, although they wouldn't do any harm if left.
For efficiency, the exit hole in a brake should be 20-40 thou. larger than the bullet diameter, to force gas out the ports. If the exit hole is too big, the effectriveness of the brake is reduced. A little collar could be installed to make the exit hole smaller. Keep in mind, the exit hole must be co-axial with the bore of the rifle.

Lots of good ideas here, and it sounds like NZ laws are just as silly as Canada's. Hungrys adapter by far would be the nicest but I'm cheap and loved shop class. So I decided to use a hack saw (two blades were required) and a dremmel and cut down a stock norc flash hider. The 5 points have been some what sharpened and really make the rifle very short. I like it, but I was very surprised how hard the alloy of the flash hider was. I bent and broke 2 hack saw blades.

But my rifle now fits very easy in the trunk of my volkswagon in a soft case with plenty of room to spare.

First of all, thankyou to all who have helped...but i'm going with buzzballer's home made "crenulated bezel"- totally legal and it looks great!!

Buzzballer's approach is part of the welfare strategy of obtaining a shorter zombie gitter since 21 Dec is fast approaching. Yuk yuk yuk

Cheers,
Barney
