Just came back from the hunt camp. A topic came up about hunting ammo. Some said soft point ammo (hunting rounds) are mandatory in Ontario. I said I'm not so sure as I have not found any thing in the Ontario regs that prohibit FMJ use as hunting ammo. Now I could be wrong as I know Quebec and other provinces specifically prohibit FMJ (at least a few years ago.) If I am wrong can some one please highlight the page /paragraph where it is clarified. Now I do not hunt with FMJ but as I said this was just a topic that came up and it did cause some discussion. Comments appreciated.

Soft point or hp or plastic tip is Better for hunting = meat in freezer

fmj will not expand = small exit hole = no blood trail = lost animal (unless it hits bone or vitals )

fmj can also be classed as some of the match ammo that will not expand

Seeing as everyone reading this thread is online, why not just check the ON Regulations?

The regulations are mainly a summary, I don't recall seeing anything specifically about FMJ ammo in the regulations but there could be some obscure statement somewhere in the full Fish & Wildlife regulations. If I'm mistaken please correct me but in the end why would someone use FMJ anyways?

Of course I agree 100% with your comment and also why would anyone hunt with FMJ. My point was that there is NO definite ruling prohibiting the use of FMJ in Ontario. Again this is just a discussion point and no other implication.

Don't assume that a fmj will only make a modest wound in comparison with a softpoint.
Friend told me that 7.62x54R ball was no good for caribou. Asked him if it had just gone right through, only making a little hole. No, it had ruined both shoulders, just about the whole front end.

Just checked the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act via Ontario E laws. There is no mention that FMJ bullets are not to be used. It does speak of shot size in shotguns for big game and calibre restriction in southern Ontario. Probably best not used but it is not illegal to use.

Thanks. That 's what I thought. Now to contact my know it all buddy to confirm what the FACT is. Just want to put his mind at ease. LOL.

I asked the question via online about this a few years ago to the MNR.....and they came back, legal to use. Not the best option for hunting but not illegal.

I've shot several deer , wolves and bear , first the .303 FMJ and then .308 FMJ and have never seen the ice pick effect that so many speak of . A little hole in and a little hole out . It's been my observation that upon hitting firm flesh or bone FMJ bullets start to tumble and leave big holes coming out sideways , if they come out . According to the ice pick effect they should be almost ideal for wolf hunting but hit a wolf with one of those and you'll have a little hole going in and a totally ruined hide coming out . I've seen a few break at the cannalure and now you have two wicked holes coming out .

Interesting that the hollow point doesn't necessarily promote expansion but causes the bullet to tumble -

Russian manufacturers Barnaul and Wolf, both produce steel jacketed, lead core 7.62x39 ammunition. Of these, the 123 grain hollow points tend to produce slightly wider wounding than their 125 grain soft point counterparts....hollow point bullets in contrast, are prone to tumbling if stability is disrupted, having the potential for broader wounding.
