Solve my Savage curiosity.

I have never heard anyone complain that Salvages weren't accurate, with the exception of the new 17 WSM, whatever model Salvage made it in. HOWEVER, let's put it in perspective, Rosie O'Donnell IS a woman.................

Yes.... difference being that she could use a rebuild and some plastic parts.....

Man, some of you guys must be swimming in cash or have a VERY understanding wife lol. I make enough that I should be fearful of where Justin is going to get the money he plans on giving to the so called middle class and I could never bring myself to pay 10 grand for a rifle (especially given the abuse I sometime subject my gear to). Not knocking anyone who does spend that kind of loot but, at the same time I offer nothing but encouragement to those coming in on the ground floor and buying what some would call disposable guns. I have a couple of rifles that crest the $1500 mark on down to a couple that fit in the $500 category and don't feel inadequate with any of them under my arm. As a matter of fact , I bought a ruger American in .243 when they first hit Canada solely to see if I would like the caliber for later upgrade. This rifle shoots so well, I wouldn't be surprised if it clover leafed three crayons. I plan on giving it to my nephew as a starter deer rifle and replacing it with a higher end rifle ,sub $2000 lol. That's high end to me.My coyote rifle is a ( dare I say it) savage 10xp predator in snow camo. This is chambered in .204 r and an absolute laser beam. I can't understand why anyone would dislike savage rifles other than their price point.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I like savage. They're usually lasers out of the box, inexpensive, and easy to work on. They may not be pretty or prestigious, but they get the job done, usually without modification.

N68, the OP is not a newbie or entry level guy, he has obviously owned and does own some firearms now........his question was about Savages and a curiosity he had developed regarding them. Were he an entry level guy just coming on board and had limited cash I'd say there is probably nothing wrong with starting with a Savage, but would advise to save another 100 bucks and get a Vanguard on sale.

Nothin better than takin a $500 Savage and out shooting your friend's fancy $ 1500 rifle/scope of another make.....most times it is the shooter not the gun !!!

I had my chitty little American out for a range trip one time and there was I guy trying to get his $3000 plus cooper 6mm to group several different loads. His would not shoot worth chit and when he saw what my lowly ruger was printing, I think he wanted to wrap his around a tree lol.

Even a Savage Axis in 270 Winchester Doug? Lol

To further elaborate, cheap guns certainly have their place, just find it odd when folks consider a standard / non-budget rifle too pretty to use. If one feels most comfortable beating up a $400 rifle I really can't fault them, but I do believe you'd appreciate a slight upgrade to a Hawkeye or Vanguard and would heavily encourage you to do so. Whatever the rifle, hunt it lots, and if it generates smiles it really can't get any better.

Extra points for getting a Merkel into a Salvage thread :d Nice..

I agree with the thoughts of using a high end rifle instead of it being a safe queen. To a point, and hopefully I'll get over it some day but I still have a hard time taking a beautiful wood stock hunting in my wet thick soggy world, if I lived in more open country it'd be different. I just get too pizzed at the wood showing so many dings so easily.

I have only ever owned 2 rifles, The first is a .22 Remington nylon 66 clone. The other, I bought a .270 Axis. I then went about changing things before even firing it. New scope, Boyd's stock, Rifle Basix trigger. Those 3 items added about 450.00 to the cost of the rifle. It is very accurate. I sighted it in and can hit the cross-hair on the paper target. I did that with a purpose built rifle holder so I took shooter error out of the equation. I only built the rifle up as I did not want to take a chance on buying a used built rifle that might not be as accurate as the seller says. Also had no interest in spending thousands and having my wife complain.

I'm guide outfitting on the north coast south of Kitimat, we share a similar habitat. These things get drenched, they earn their keep. ;) Nowhere is there a spot too ugly or rough for a pretty rifle in my eyes. Last one is Dogleg's Model 70 Alaskan .375 H&H as we sit and watch on a log jam looking for grizzlies. How many derailment points does this garner?

This all said, some posturing here. I did buy a Baikal double rifle, though I actually see it as pretty. But it's cheap enough to leave in camp and lose, or sink from a tipped boat, so I get where folks are coming from.

^^

Too all the guys saying get a vanguard 2 ... yes and no... I have had a ton of savages... All have been shooters. Especially with the right ammo or hand loads... At the end of the day an axis 2 with scope is 550 bucks plus tax... Will it look nice, feel nice or be anything to show off ? Not a chance... Will it shoot? Damn straight it will ! If your looking for a get the job done bush beater on a budget go for it !

If your looking for the all in one complete package, target, hunt, feels good, looks good, show off to your buddy with a guarantee lazer of a rifle... The Vanguard 2 is where it is at... For double the price and still need an optic.

If you want a fun project gun... Damn go savage your going to dump the crappy parts anyways why spend more then you need too ? Boyds stock, or a tacticool one. New trigger, drop some nice rings and glass on there... Likely will costl ess then your mates gun and shoot better/look better when finished.

Nothing better watching a buddy cringe when he marks up his target rifle gun in the bush... Lol

Love the vanguard stock. Great for smashing bush.

Are you calling the Vanguard a "target" rifle too nice for the bush?!?

That's the mentality I don't get.... I hunt with classic rifles, and rifles costing up to 2k before optics. And I don't "cringe" when they show they have history. They are hunting rifles, not replica wall hangers. Lol
