Some interesting (BLOWN) cases I have known. :)

Why not?

Been there when each one was produced!

Left, a 7X57 fired in a 30-06. The 98 Mauser extractor held the case close
enough to touch off the primer. Could have been a lot worse.

Right, a 300 Win Mag fired in 300 Wby Mag. Not too serious, but not good for the chamber either.

30-06 fired in a Parker-Hale 308 Norma Magnum. Amazingly, the action vented the gas safely down through the magazine, away from the shooter.

And, for the grand finale, we have a 280 Rem fired in a 270 Win!

Didn't think this was possible, but the guy got the bolt closed and fired the rifle. If you look closely, you can see the smeared 28 of the 280 headstamp. Not the best way to produce a rimmed case!

All four rifles, after being checked out, are still going strong.

I have a 7mm Mag that was fired in a 300 Win Mag rifle ... very short neck, it has!! 270 fired in a 7mm Mag .. split like one of the ones above. None of my own yet, though....touch wood! Eagleye.

An ugly one I heard about: a shooter loaded a .308 Win into a .25-06 (it chambered and fired. Can you imagine what it took to squeeze a .308" bullet down a .257" bore? Apparently he beat the action open with a hammer, and sold the rifle at a gun show the next day. Ugh).

no offense but it looks like some of you need to get better organized. You got very lucky this time.

That's the whole point of this thread, that things like this can happen, so be diligent....all the time.

These are brass from the range here over the past 25 years, so the frequency of this kind of stuff happening is not high, but the consequences can be.

hen I was newspapering out East, local hardware-store manager got himself a nice new PH .308 Mauser. Beautiful rifle. He called me up a few days later (I ran occasional articles in the paper on guns and shooting, so he thought I knew something, I guess) because the thing was "bustin' her shucks". Casings spread all over the landscape, big flames coming out of the back of the rifle (which is what scared him), things like that.

Took a look at the rifle and it was stamped ".308NM".... and the .308 NORMA MAGNUM cartridge was not available in Canda at that time. So I got a set of dies and some brass and loaded him up 60 rounds (you could do that without going to jail, back then), put them into 4 nice new boxes because the boxes weren't big enough and took them over to him.

He pulled out a round and looked at it and said, "Lard Tunderin' Jaysis, but if that's a NORMAL Magnum, I don't ever want to see a ABNORMAL one!"

And that just about says it all.
.

Worst one I saw personally was a couple of years ago a fella from town here bought a new Remington semi in 30-06. Well he sat down to site it in and blam,... hugh recoil and black stuff all over his hand. The box said 30-06 and the barrel was stamped 30-06 but it was a 270.

heard of a guy with a 50 at a shooting range with a buncha random loads and he was actually hammering his bolt closed with a hammer to get the bullets to chamber and well u guessed it, his hand isnt so full fingers anymore
