Sorta related question here. I have a 270, and my buddy has a 30-06. I know the 30-06 in my 270 wont fit, but what about the other way around? Would a 270 fit and fire in a 30-06 safely, albeit without any accuracy? Or is the shoulder in a different position or at a different angle to prevent this from happening? (No plans on doing this, but when talking to friends who aren't so "in the know" about guns, this always seems to come up when we try to explain how the 270 is a necked-down 30-06...)
The 270 will fit and fire "safely" in a 30-06...the two cartridges have identical headspace dimensions. The neck will simply expand to the larger diameter.
There will be zero accuracy, of course, and the newly formed 30-06 case might be a bit too long. D.
