Was at a gun shop today and purchased some new 28 gauge ammunition that I did not have in my collection. While there, I asked the fellow if he had any other 28 gauge kicking around. He brought out several boxes of old 28 gauge and some small plastic bags with shells in them. One box was a full 25 round box of C-I-L Imperial ball loads.I bought it, along with a box of 25 Remington with the old see through plastic hulls and a box of 5 C-I-L Imperial slugs.

I came home a happy boy.:)

Nice! I really like those old translucent green Remington shells... my 'go to' 28 gauge ammo when I was a teenager.

Can I assume the box of 25 round ball shells is older than the box of 5 slugs? Seems to me that there was a time when those 'large shot / slugs' were sold in standard 25 round boxes but then switched to 5 round boxes - presumably for higher profit margins? I do have a few 5 round boxes of Imperial slugs (orange cardboard). 28 gauge slugs of any type are very scarce, at least in Canada

I like those old see through green Remington shells as well.Would love to have a few boxes of 28 gauge Peters shells with the see through blue plastic,to go with the green ones I have.

When I first started using the 28 gauge, the 28 gauge shells available in my area ,were Imperial orange paper and Super-X red paper. The 28 gauge was one of , if not the last to convert to plastic from paper. The Imperial were orange, then a year or two before they went to plastic ,they switched to red paper.

Remington I believe ,was the first to switch to plastic in the 28 gauge.Remington 28 gauge ammunition was not available in my area back then.

Yes, the balls would of been available before the slugs. These are Imperial with the 3/4 ounce ball.I believe a 2 1/2 inch 5/8 ounce ball was available under the Canuck brand. Here is a link to a picture of the box the 28 gauge balls I have are in.The box in the picture is number 6,but the boxes look the same, except for the shot/ball markings.

I assume there were 25 round boxes of Imperial slugs at on time, but not sure on that, have not seen any myself.I had assumed C-I-L went to the 5 round slug box ,as most people of the day would not have wanted to spend the cost for 25 rounds of 28 gauge slugs. Since they probably did not shot a lot of them.So the 5 round box ,would be more economical for the average buyer.Just my opinion.:)

If any of the 28 gauge slugs were made using the red paper or plastic,I do not know.I know that for myself ,I have never seen any.

Those old orange paper 28 gauge shells are my favourite, followed by the see through green Remington ones.:)

My local gunshop owner keeps tossing a box of challenger 28ga slugs on the counter when ever im in there. Sooner or later ill cave but theyre like 70 or 80 bucks for a box of 25.
I shot some 1oz loads thru my a400 xplor. The empty hulls seemed to land in the next county.

Epps has 28 gauge Challenger slugs for $52.99 a 25 round box.

Does your x400 xplor through the 1 ounce empty much farther than 3/4 ounce field loads?

Oh ya. 3/4oz goes almost to the next skeet station. The one oz stuff ends up on the far side of the next station
I assume the 3/4 ounce loads you are using, are the lighter loaded skeet target loads.Just wonder ,how far a 3/4 ounce field load would go, compared to the one ounce field load.I am guessing there would not be much,if any difference.:)

I have a stash of steel loads for dove. 1oz for pheasants. The vast majority of its use is skeet
I have about 5 boxes of 28 gauge steel. So far I have not used it.Bought it for a time ,when all lead could be banned. Also ,some of the earlier 28 gauge 5/8 ounce Bismuth, that I thought I might use on ducks.More or less figured 5/8 ounce of Bismuth would likely be too light to use on ducks, unless there were quite close,so never used it either.:(

What are your steel 28 gauge loads?Mine are Winchester and Federal 5/8 ounce loads.

Doves. Not very often at all. I usually take a 20ga double for dove.
If I was to hunt the inner pond at rondeau or walk ditch banks for puddle ducks id take the 28ga
Love the gun

Yes, the 28 gauge guns are easy to fall in love with.:)Doves illegal to hunt here. How well do you find the 28 gauge steel loads to work for yourself?
