No no, I said a "GOOD" reason.

So you're not a fan of short actions... and a short action is therefore not an advantage.

By that logic the .308 should have died on the vine, as should've the 7-08. They offer no advantage over the .30-06 or the .280/.270. Yet they still do pretty well in terms of sales.

I still say [as do many, many other people who buy firearms] that magnum performance in a short action is a marketable idea. Sales over the past decade or so would agree with me, even if your opinion doesn't. No biggie.

huntin gun..u right but he will not understand...

Not one person on that thread (not AOL by the way) has been able to come up with a single solitary "good" reason to use a WSM in the field over something else. Unless you consider a single stack detachable magazine in a Browning something.

Chuck, what you are failing to grasp is that "Good" in this case is largely subjective.

I listed a bunch of reasons that some may prefer a WSM over another and mentioned that it is up to the individual to decide if that is important ot him or not. If it's not important, fine, use what you like. If you want to look foolish, write a poorly referenced article the way Wieland did.

One other "good" reason that you have overlooked is that for some people, hunting and shooting is a fulfilling hobby and they enjoy shooting and hunting with different rifles and cartridges.

I've owned 30-06's, 300 WM's and one 300WSM. I only own the 300WSM now because the other 2 didn't offer me any "good reason" to use them over my 300WSM.

Good on you for taking the time to school chuck.

Since someone brought up "AOL". Omega reminds me of 209x50 from that site. I think his real name is ####. Wonder if he still posts over there???
Oh, by the way I have no use for a short mag. I have a 25-06, 30-06, 223 and a.22. plus a shotgun. pretty much covers anything i want to shoot. Not worth my time to change to short fats just so i can pay more for shells.

Sounds to me that the bad publicity the wsm are getting is the same bull that the 284 win got when it first came out. Feeding problems, bullets extending to far into the case ect. Thats funny, Ultra Light Arms most common chambering is the 284 win. I like short actions and I own a 7mm wsm and three 284 winchesters and dont have feeding problems. Just my 2 cents, each to their own.

And that's me as well. Well, maybe a few more of each, but basically the same. The biggest I own is a .30-06. And will be. Everything I have shot has come home with me. I have no reason to own a magnum anything. My short actions are in .243 and .308. However, as I have said before...to each his own. If you gotta have the new whizbanger super short crackerjack magnum or you will just never sleep again, then, by all means, go get it!! But don't tell me that it beats every other rifle out there.

And to address gun or sports writers and their agendas...I have not met or read one current, syndicated writer that tells the truth. All are coloured by their kickback, product accessibility, and opinions. I take every one of them with a grain of salt and try to read lots before I build an opinion of my own. And I try to espouse my opinion without trying to influence the world. It is just an opinion. I knowthat there is no need for anything larger than the .30-06 for North American game. However, I also know that, to some, it is a boring cartridge and they gotta have the bigger, better, faster one. So, let them have it. If there is enough demand and the major manufacturers pick it up, then it is a success in my book. Live and learn.
Sorry Chuck, I been doing this a lot longer than some here and still won't budge on what I know and what I like. You need some TI and a little more education.
Gatehouse, thanks for the rebuttal, saved me a lot of typing.

I have rifles in calibers from 17 to 50. I am always playing with whatever I can find that's new or interesting to me. As I age, I find I hunt more to just take my rifles shooting then any great desire for more meat, eventually I can see me stopping hunting all together, and just wandering the woods taking my rifle for a walk, as my friend Ian says. I have no problem building or buying another rifle just to try a caliber out, and I have done so more times then I can count. I don't see the WSM/SAUM twins as any great practical or accuracy advantage, but that doesn't make them bad either. They fit a niche that appeals to some people, and that's reason enough. The more people that take up this sport for whatever reason is a good thing, period. - dan

You make absolutely no sense and my education is fine. My experience has well over 75 big game animals in the pot at 33 and many rifles have gone through my hands. Several of them custom. I don't need to be patronized by individuals who think they need to save me from something. I will make no apology for preferring what I do and I make that preference based on hunting a darn lot of game in a darn lot of environments. If that doesn't jive with you I don't care nor do I have to.

yes

I think the short mags were an answer to a problem that never existed...

You're right to a certain degree..something like the first vehicle you bought with power steering and brakes..no problem to fix, just a nice option...some of us happen to like the new technology and use it ...

Chuck ..I am overwhelmed by your success at 33 yrs old which makes that 17 yrs of experience.. and "well over 75 Big Game in the pot" thats 4.4 per year (or is this friends and videos included) ..I guess what I 'm saying is how much fact and merit do u have to your post ..nothing personal but why can't you accept change and other peoples opinions to anything ..you are not always right and either am I or anyone else ...so listen more than you speak (or type) and all will be well....I have been a member on here for over 5 yrs and you alone made me post back ..go figure..again I respect your views and hope you do the same !!!

Given your shenanigans I have zero respect for you or your views.

Those numbers are mine and mine alone. This year I will have at least 8 big game tags in my pocket so break out the calculator if you need to. Now factor in hunting partner harvest on top of that and look in the mirror to see who should go back to listening instead of talking.

Change has bugger all to do with it nor did I say my way is the only way. Not all opinions are created equal and we have the apparent "owner" of this thread decrying modern "technology" on a neighboring one sounding off about feeding issues no less. Now do us a favor and give us some first hand experience on the subject or slither back into the hole you crawled out of.
