Son's Cougar Today

Dropped the carcass off to a local trapper for his wolf baits out west. The smell after a few hours being dead put me off trying a steak.Never seen an animal die so fast 6.5x55 140gr Partition upwards [obviously] through the heart one lung and shoulder blade on the off side with zero pelt damage .Dime sized exit. The cat just slumped limp in the tree crotch with the tail writhing for 15-20 seconds like a de-capped snake and went to sleep. Put him on heavy plastic and skinned him for a live mount on the kitchen floor ,where it;s well lit and warm.No significant other to say otherwise/ex=wife. I suppressed the urge to go out and scent mark the 4 corners of the property.Have to go down to Fish and wildlife this am to register the kill and let them pull a small tooth for aging etc.Incidentally a 4" stick is placed in the mouth ,so when rigger mortise occurs the mouth sets open to allow extraction. We are in Alberta and when quotas are met zones are closed accordingly.........Harold

A mature cat but with a mouth full of quills. Sounds like he could have been on the long slow decline of life. Perhaps finding him before his health deteriorated to the point of wandering into town and causing trouble, was the right move.

Jeezbuss that is a bigg'un tree munnkey.
Going to have to look up once in a while in the bush.

There seems to be a fair number of them bark crawlers in this area too.

Great thead and photos..................thanks..................

I think there's a 60 day period after the kill for skull measuring.....then a trip to the meat eating beetles. An oldtimer/cougar man said they have an enzyme that dissolves quills? I knew fishers were porcupine specialists but not cougars. You should see the quills on the African ones............Harold

Harold if I had gotten one , it would get it mounted as well. My cousin just got one and was quoted 3 to 5 grand for a life size mount . That would empty my pockets.

Congrats, Please post the mount.

Did you actively track it or just came upon it?

The hounds in the pic tell the tale........ I went cougar hunting once, and would love to do it again.... but it would take an exercise regimen for sure....... I can walk for miles and miles, but that hunt I was on required lots of running once the hounds got on a cat.....

Apparently it only takes about 10-15 minutes from the time the hounds tree the cat to the time the cat realizes it can demolish a couple of small beagles in seconds....

We did harvest a cat on the hunt, but I was unlicensed and just a witness back then as I was stationed there for military work and went with a friend and his brother.....

I also hear the meat is fantastic.....

Harold, please feel free to debunk any or all of the above as my experience is obviously limited here and just passing along what I was told....
