I have a lead on a SKS out of Vernon (B.C) a guy I know referred me to a GunSmith (Del Selin) who apparently "Specializes" in Used/Russian stuff, so if my information holds up I should be joining up with the Red crew soon.

Also on a side note it is my first rifle :D I have a 12 Gauge ithaca side by side, but im never ever going to shoot it, i have had 2 gunsmiths look at it but it still has a double fire problem. My Ex-Step-Dad gave it to me after it turned his whole shoulder green, so im going to clean her up and just keep her as a showpiece (its is about a 120 years old after all.... thats a good run for a shotgun).

Any rate once I get this SKS what are some must do improvements? It is going to be my Brush/Small game gun, I hope a friend of mine will teach me to reload my own ammo so I can get the most performance out of it. But keeping in mind I dont plan on competing but I want a gun that can perform in the real world what are some things you guys will suggest? also my budget is closer to $100 every two weeks that i can spare so nothing crazy eh :p

I was thinking about buying one of those 1,000 round boxes to kick me off, included in the initial cost of purchasing.

I figure a thousand rounds should last a little while, at least till may i think.

Buy lots of ammo and shoot it. Don't waste your money on "improvements" for an SKS.

I think there are two exceptions to this...
If you are going to be hunting with it, using soft primer ammo, then for safety I would get a spring firing pin to avoid possible slam fires.

I would also check the trigger hammer/sear for safety...this is from kivaari.com website about trigger safety:

"...the "safety" merely blocks the trigger lever and does not secure either the hammer or the sear. Their safety and performance can be greatly improved with reduced pull, reduced creep, smoothness, repeatability, and clear 2 stage operation.

With the breech clear, cycle the bolt to #### the hammer, remove the rear cover, remove the recoil spring, and squeeze the trigger to observe the hammer's movement PRIOR to let off as the hammer slides on the surface of the sear:

1) if the hammer moves forward, then the hammer/sear is said
to have negative engagement.

2) if the hammer remains motionless, then the hammer/sear is said
to have neutral engagement.

3) if the hammer moves rearward, then the hammer/sear is said
to have positive engagement.

"Positive engagement" is the preferred and safer condition. This is because the hammer will tend to want to remain on its full #### notch until overcome by the sear. This becomes more imperative if the creep has been minimized correctly as the hammer's travel distance over the sear to let off, is markedly less.

Neutral and negative conditions are less safe than the positive condition but to say that neutral and negative conditions are dangerously unsafe is an overstatement IF THEY HAVE SUBSTANTIAL CREEP as a safety cushion.

On the other hand, a neutral or negative condition is dangerous if the creep has been reduced or the standard configuration has minimal creep. Prudence dictates seeking the positive condition if at all possible and if there is any doubt have a competent gunsmith inspect the rifle. "

More info about both these things can be found at sksboards.com under the SKS Accessories and Troubleshooting forums.

Del Selins was sold out when I asked last month and they did not know when they were getting the rest of the SKS order in but maybe it's shown up since then. He didn't seem very confident that they would get the remaining 20 rifles they ordered.

Thanks for the heads up Annie, I was going to have the gunsmith go through it and just tighten it up. I will have him check out those things too.

That could bite, I had two people refer me to him as "The Man" around here for them. Well if Del Selin doesnt have any and cant get any, I will just order from Mil Arms. I know they are getting an order in may and it is only $50 in shipping so it could be worse. might give me time to buy two too.... 1 to bastardize and one to keep as a collector...

X2! Stevo and Annie.

Save the money one would waste on mods and put it towards non corrosive soft point ammo for hunting and some reloading components and gear instead.

They are what they are and work best as such, ie...300 Meter battle rifles.

Also unless you ad the firing pin spring kit as Annie mentions you will need type CCI #34 arsenal primers.

Picked up the last SKS Del Selin had, set me back $279 before tax.

Anyways it is a nice little russian, very happy with it I dont have time to post pics right now but later on i will figure out how to upload them.
