Ever see this funky little stamp?

its repeated on the butt plate tang

I have the same on mine. Given that its in an M1917 stock without volley sights, its gotta be an American cartouche of some type.

I have those stamps on all kinds of small 1917 and P14 parts. The 1917 stocks are a little longer in the action then the p14 and the finger grooves are longer. The handguards are slightly different as well.

Don't take me for a particularly well-informed opinion, but off the top of my head, marking disk in the butt, unequal length of grasping grooves, and it has a flat... ledge (best word I can come up with) on the left side of the stock.

"WWI Eagle's Head Acceptance stamp. Found on the top of the left receiver rail of the M1917 and many other smaller parts." Source: The U.S. Rifle, caliber .30, M1917 by #### CULVER.
cheers Darryl

but this rifle is a P-14....303

But it has no Brit acceptance stamps...unlike my other P-14 which has lots of Brit markings. Weird...The Brit marked one even has a '1914' mark on the butt and 'made in USA' on the butt.

It could be that you have a CAI rebuild then
Look at the muzzle and tell be if you see a CAI Vermont stamp there.
If you do then your rifle is a parts rifle. These rifles saw lots of polishing and marke rubbed out then reblued and restocked in M17 wood.

My 4 digit P14 was stuck in an M17 stock when I got it, and it has the "made in USA" stamp just behind the grip.
Not sure what the "1914" mark is, unless it has something to do with the model. I don't think the P14 was put into full production until 1916.

*ding ding ding*...

You are correct RC...it is clearly marked CAI ST. A. VT.

The upper surface of the reciever ring is extra shiny but the oval with "RE" inside is still visible

Would explain why the stock is in such minty shape

Just for reference purposes as there seems to be a bit of confusion on this one - the Eagle Head stamp with accompanying two or three digit number identified the individual assemblier who who put various components together on individual M1917 rifles at the factory.

While the Eagle Head stamp can face in either direction it is generally found in the following locations: bolt assembly, bolt stop assembly, buttplate assembly, front sight assembly, lower band assembly, safety assembly, stock assembly, trigger guard assembly and upper band assembly.

An interesting note is that the assembly marks were stamped after finishing so if the mark is parkerized or blued the rifle has been refinished.

EDIT: This interesting note obviously only applies to the metal stamps and not the assembly stamp on stocks located behind or in front of the magazine well.

Hope this helps :)

My P-14 has weird markings also.
I have some sort of Deer or other 4 legged animal stamped on my barrel.

I haven't been able to get a good digital pic of it. :(

BTW This rifle shoots nicer then My #4. :D

Looks like "FR 1914".
Somehow I doubt this helped. :D

Maybe next time the antiques road show shows up in a Canadian city the local Gunnutz should file in with their P14s, and give the research guys a real mental workout. :D

Nobody even wants to guess at this mark....another rifle. Not the one in the original post

The marking is IR 1914. It's a right-side buttstock Remington P14 model designation (as part of the manufacturer's roundel).

That's OK I know I'm crazy...besides I found yet more markings on my P-14!
Also turns out the Bolt serial # does not match the receiver or sight serial #.

And the barrel has a "W", Bolt has an "R" receiver has an "ERA".

What a lovely shot this mutt is, I'm hooked on P-14s. :D

Pardon the post Hyjack. :)
