speed of a 9mm

someone tell me that the 7.62x25 can go as fast as 1600fps...so ..i just wonder , can a 9mm go as fast as that .

Yep, that is probably the hot Czech ammo, around 1550 FPS. Load up a 9mm with a light bullet at +P+ pressure and it will easily match that velocity.

And those loads are absolutely devastating against paper and cardboard. ;)

I loaded up some 90 grainers for Bianchi Cup a few years back that were somewhere in the 1500 - 1600 fps range and I had some 115 gr bulets doing 1550 out of a P9 to make major in IPSC
 
Anything can be done, at a price. The price here is that the gun firing those rounds will last a much shorter time than a gun firing 9mm loads. If you want to drive a 9mm bullet to extreme velocity try the 357 Sig. At least you'll be doing it in a gun that's set up for it.

115 grains @ 1550 fps?

The .357 Sig is 1300 FPS with a 127 grain bullet, and that's a hot load.

If you had said 80 grains @ 1550 fps, I might have believed you.
 
Do the math. To make a 180 pf (175 was major at the time + a 5pf cushion) with a 115 grain bullet it has to go 1565 fps.
1300 fps with a 127 is a mild load...lol
My .38 super currently chrono's at around 1300fps (125gr bullet) and thats only because they dropped Major to 160pf, used to be over 1400 at the old major pf of 175.

Alright, your talking about reloaded ammo and I'm talking about factory stuff. Nobody even mentioned power factors.

I understood the question in terms of factory manufactured ammo. You can go ahead and make all the proof loads you want for any gun you choose, just because you can do it one time, doesn't really mean anything.

There is no such thing as a factory 9mm 115 grain load @ 1550 fps. Not even, 1400 fps. As a matter of fact, the fastest one I can find is 115 grain at 1320 fps.

Also, I believe that 3000-5000 FPS could be achieved in 9mm Luger with very light and strong polymer bullets shot out of a 5 inch barrel.

This should be on mythbusters.

If you even had an inkling about ammunition and firearms, you would know a very light bullet would carry no distance whatsoever. Kinda like throwing a piece of Styrofoam.

But you don't really know much about ammunition, do you?
 
Ah might not have much force past 2 feet... but at the muzzle it might have a FPS increase, right?

I think asking the question 'how fast' is like asking how fast can a sports car go. Very generalized, and open to interpratation.

yeah depends on what gun, length of berrel, weight of bullet, how much powder you can cram in a casing, etc.

I know it's a tad larger than the 9mm dia of .355" but the .358 Norma mag runs a 180gr @ 3400fps. Some could be faster yet.You want the speed of any 9mm bullet or just handgun ones??? haha
