I am always interested in bonded bullets and for some reason have the necessity to try new stuff when it shows up. Accubond is the baseline here. And yes if I had an abundance of Speers you bet I'd shoot them
Also having a consistent product. The Trophy Bonded Bear Claws were good pills, discontinued. Grand slams were the poor man's partition with a harder lead core base and softer lead nose, worked very well, now they use a single soft lead core. Deepcurl was a bonded pill but made using a plating method, also discontinued. I think they quit making Hotcores too now.
Speaking of new, I developed a load for the Federal Trophy Bonded bullet, which to my understanding, is a derivative of the Bear Claws. Didn't harvest a deer last year due to a nasty break in my right leg the night before white tail season started...
still a little upset about being absent from the annual hunting trip.
Hitzy...I would like to have tried those yesteryear Grand Slams. I really can't gage if the new ones are comparable in performance.
I've got some Speer flat bottoms loaded for development in my 303 br. waiting to be tested. I liked the Sierra's for all things
but hunting because they work well for me, but over the last year the price per box has seemed to have creeped up by 8 or so dollars for the stuff I am interested in. I've started to look at other options for range time and to develop my load development skills.
The 303 cal bullets from speer that I have weighed and measured are really consistent, A LOT better than the Campros. If they shoot between the Campro and the Sierra, for the price in this old gun...I will be satisfied.
I saw on one of the site sponsors site Federal Fusion bullets as components for the first time. Those worked well on game and were accurate in a factory offering, before I started reloading. And the price is more acceptable for trigger time at the range and with these I wouldn't hesitate to use on deer sized game.
Perhaps I am the anomaly but I think availability and pricing of Speer/Federal brand bullets is becoming more accessable these days...and becoming an option to consider. No disrespect Tod, I think there is some progressive thinking or "marketing" going on there and for myself, I'm listening a little bit...or at least my wallet is.
FWIW
