Putting together an 18" AR15 SPR and need advice on an optic for it.

The glass is going to be put in an Larue optic mount (LT-104 30mm).
So any 30mm tube suggestions would be great!

Optic will be just used for precision shooting out to around 300yds.

Nightforce 2.5-10x24

I agree with mrsmitty. The NF scope is super clear and can be cranked down to 4x for service rifle, or up to 10x for target shooting. Lots of adjustment. I've owned two and have no complaints.

after i get over the sticker shock...the nightforce looks pretty sweet.

Sidenote: how do you like the UBR? im between that and a PRS for my build.

The NXS 2.5x10 is arguably the best bang for the buck and a real gem of a scope. They are a fantastic choice for any AR.

The PRS stock is heavy and offers no real benefit to the AR platform imho.
You will very likely never need the comb adjustment, and there are better choices out there to adjust the length of pull.
I would recommend the LMT SOPMOD stock as the best option.

Yes, the NF scopes are pricey, but then again so are the Leupold Mark 4's. Compared to an S&B they are inexpensive, so I guess it is all relative. I would not put a NF on a 2" - 3" MOA rifle, but on a quality precision AR its perfect. The advantage of the NF scope is that it is a good balance between size and magnification. Any other quality scope in the 10x range is the size of a full size rifle scope. Also they don't make the 2.5-10's anymore, however there may be a few old stock scopes at some dealers. I'd try CRAFM, or ATR. You can probably source a good used 2.5-10x24 for $1100 to $1400 with the Larue mount, if you are patient and ready to move on a moments notice. As for the stock, I think the PRS is a better precision option however it is fixed. I like the UBR as it is the most solid collapsible stock that I have used. Oh yeah, and it looks cool. If you do not mind a bigger scope, the Leupold Mark 4 Precision Rifle line would be good and you could probably find one for under $800 used.

Take a look at the leupold "Mark AR Series" ($280-$550 US); or the Nikon "M-223" Riflescopes ($329-$450 US). I saw these in the Cabellas catalog. Decent optics at an affordable price.

You'll be able to reach much farther than 300 yds if you choose to.

NF still makes a 2.5-10. The current 2.5-10 has a 32 mm objective lens versus a 24 mm on the previous generation:

Millet DMS gets my vote. I used it overseas without any issues. It held a zero, but that may be because it was in a Larue mount. It did get banged around alot in the back of the vehicle.
I also used the S&B Short Dot with great success. But this is on the extreme side compared to Millet.
YMMV,
Hoddie

From what I've heard, NF doesn't make the 2.5-10 x 24 any more, just the x 32(beat to the punch).

Which is unfortunate. I have one on my LTR and want another for an SPR project of my own.

As a few have said though, it would be an ideal optic for the role. And I also agree with what beltfed said re the PRS stock. Get the LMT SOPMOD or a Magpul ACS. I'm putting ACS stocks on most of my AR's in the 14.5 to 18" range now.

There are CGN dealers around that still have NXS 2.5-10x24 around with the NP-2R reticle and zero stop. They're more expensive now than when I bought mine a few months ago though.

Nothing exceeds like excess! Your just jealous cause I got a bigger scope than you :p

Budget shopper...lol :owned:

I'm no budget shopper.... ;)

I used to have the NF 5.5-22 x 56. It was a little too much scope for my LTR so I got rid of it.

But now you have a bigger scope.... lol

Gotta recommend the NF NXS 1-4. I used one overseas, and loved it. I find the higher magnification models seem a little excessive for an AR15 to me, whereas the 1-4 NXS is smaller, lighter, and helps keep that lightweight carbine of yours.... well, lightweight!

Only go for the really high magnification if you're going to be doing serious long range target shooting. I've shot out to 400m in the military with the C79 which is only 3.4x, and gotten reliable hits, so anyone who says you need a 10x scope for shooting at 300m is on crack.

I don't think anyone in this thread is suggesting you NEED a 10 power scope at 300m (hell, Irons will do); we are suggesting the 2.5x10 offers alot of flexability for those that are setting up an SPR. If a shooter is off the bipod comparing the 1x4 NXS and the 2.5x10 NXS both at full power @ 300m the differentiation of the two is significant...I know I have both.;)

I am not a fan of the SPR designation I prefer Designated Marksman Rifle or DMR as it is a rifle to fill specific role and does not bring hockey helmets to mind.

That said a good 2.5-10 will be a better optic than a 1-4 for target discrimination at range as well as reading wind and mirage.
